Change of plans
Dh can't go to school this fall. He received a couple of grants but the school says they won't accept any more financial aid until he gets a degree in something. They said he has enough credits he should have one by now. I know they have to set limits to keep people from taking advantage but he wasn't doing that. He's been back in school for 4 semesters, most part time but they add those credits to the ones he had from a different program from 12 years ago. If someone had pointed this out he could have remained on track to getting the degree he went for originally while we could get the aid because once he has a degree, they'll take financial aid again. Instead he took alot towards secondary education as his schedule allowed. This delays when he goes back to when we have the money as well as he now needs classes that don't really help him progress further in what he went back for. He was only going to take an online class or two anyway with the way he works right now but it is still frustrating.
I am sorry I know that has to be very frustrating.
Hopefully he can get this all sorted out. It is frustrating when you don't have things clearly explained to you, someone should have let him know this might be an issue when he started taking classes..
That *is* frustrating! How are they adding credits to those from 12 years ago?! For masters work, it's only 7. Once you get 7+ years past the start of the credits you're using, you can no longer use those toward the masters degree. That might vary from state to state, and I've never checked on it for undergrad, but really! That's a long time!
How frustrating.
This is the exact same problem I had this year. I was accepted into the nursing program and advised to quit my job to get full financial aide. 3 weeks later, they told me they wouldn't be able to give me any after all because of the number of credits I already have, which include credits from 1997 when I got my degree. It really sucks, because no one thinks to mention this little problem, do they! Good luck getting something straightened out.
Oh it is so frustrating! I swear it's like there is a secret club that doesn't want us to move ahead in anyway. What I don't understand is who benefits from this. The school gets money one way or the other whether it's out of our pocket or through the grant.
My friend petitioned the school about this same thing and won. I think it might be worth calling back and asking if there is an appeal process.
That is a good idea Kaye and something I'm going to look into.
