Scary episode with ds yesterday
And when it comes to the kids hurting themselves, catching weird rashes, being sick I am usually pretty calm but yesterday ds scared the crap out of me. As you know he is recovering from surgery, about ten days ago. He has be pretty laid back, not doing too much, etc. We both went out to the movies Sat night then did some window shopping for a bit in this outdoor shopping center by the water. Sunday we both slept late then I took him, a friend and dd to the go-karts and arcade. When we were in the arcade I noticed he was looking a bit clammy but his color was good and he was acting okay, so I didn't say anything to him. About ten minutes later he comes over to me upset stating that his stomach was hurting. I asked him if he had to use the restroom he said no but he felt like he was going to throw up. I also know he didn't eat before we left. I told him we would go over to IHop and he could order some eggs or soup, that he was probably over-heated and hungry. (I was thinking that his blood sugar may have dropped a bit making him feel ill). I told dd to order him a gatorade, juice or soda in the arcade and we would go to the car. Walking to the car, almost there, he starts to really hang on me...then he says he can't see! OMG!! His eyes were wide open! My very first flashes of thoughts were, he's having a stroke, from the effects of the surgery, I let him get over heated, he didn't have lunch and I'm going to have to take him to the ER AND dh will get custody of the girls because I messed up on my watch....(my ranting thoughts seem funny to me now lol) I sat him into the van, he's still saying that he can't see....then he throws up all over the place! Right away he can see and feels a bit better, thank goodness. He was probably starting to blackout/faint. I almost freaked out! DD came with some apple juice while I was cleaning up. (Of course I am gagging all the while because I can deal with explosive diarhea but I can not handle a speck of vomit.) He drank some of the juice. When we got home about 15 minutes later, he felt normal, took a shower, ate mozzerella cheese sticks and was back to his usual self. Just thought I would share..I guess this is just another weird thing, as a mom, I can add under my belt
I'm glad he's okay. What a weird thing! Do you think you should take him to the doctor, anyway, even though he is better?
Thanks, Dawn...no, I don't think he needed to be checked out, afterall. I did keep a good eye on him for the rest of the evening and was prepared to take him in to the ER if I suspected he was in trouble. He does see the ENT tomorrow for a follow-up. I'll discuss this with him. I do think because he didn't eat, that his blood sugar may have dropped a bit, making him sick to his stomach and about to faint. Plus, it was 92 degrees, very humid, yesterday and he was out in the heat for a couple of hours. I do think I let him overdue it this weekend, though, after not really doing too much for almost a week.
Annie, as someone who has fainted a few times in the past, losing my sight is one of the things that happens EVERY time. I am inclined to agree with you, that his blood sugar dropped due to not eating, etc. Same thing has happened to my DS, Jeff a number of times - and it was always due to not eating and being overheated. How is he now?
Yeah, it does sound like all those things, plus the heat, all worked together to make him miserable.
Just FYI my dd had the exact same thing happen to her at school. She didn't quiet throw up, just did the whole dry heave thing. I did take her to the doc to get the whole dehydrated, low blood sugar answer. It scared the crap out of me and we are really just feeling a bit better about it
Well as someone else who has gone through exactly what you just explained I can tell you that for me it was from my sugar and lack of eating and being way too hot outside. Make him rest and get lots of liquids into him.
OMG I am glad he's okay. Ame
I am so glad he is OK!!!!!!!
