What part of Canada are you in now? I know you were in British Columbia, but I thought you moved to the other side of Canada, esp if you are shopping in Freeport. I am going up to PEI on Saturday and I wanted to know if there are any grocery stores that are right off the highway once I cross the border into New Brunswick. I just think it would be easier to buy groceries in Canada. Any good little restaurants on that route?

Oh, I'm so sorry that I didn't see this earlier. We just left the island. Please stop by on your way back. We are in NB, right near the US border.

Just thought I would add some more in case you check this while on route:
-make sure you use up any beef products that you purchase in Canada. They will not let you take them in to the US (not even bologna which for some reason they believe has beef in it :)

-buy milk/milk products in the US before coming over...they are a fortune here in the Maritimes...I'm not sure why

-email me at p c s m i t h @ n b dot s y m p a t i c o dot c o m

without the spaces of course and maybe we could have coffee on your way back through. Are you going through Calais or Woodstock?

Hi Paula,

I went both ways through Calais. I am sorry I didn't see this, I would have loved to meet up. The dairy was expensive, but so good and the milk was local so that was cool.

as far as the island goes...I am in love. I would move there in a heartbeat. It is so different from where I am now. I live in a small town in Massachusetts, but nothing compared to Tignish. I have never even heard of a co-op. I loved everything about it - except the 10 hour drive. I met a lot of locals and they are just such good, kind, people. I missed lobster season - we don't have that here, I can get lobster whenever I want from the store, but mark my words, I will be going after 8/8/2009 next year.

What's a co-op exactly? I recently read Anne of Green Gables so I'm interested in your PEI experience!

By Colette on Sunday, August 3, 2008 - 10:58 am:

a co-op is a store that sells everything from groceries, to hardware, to clothing. Kind of like a small general store, and then if you live near a co-op you buy into it and get a share of the profits at the end of the year - something like that. I didn't see any regular grocery stores up on the island.

Oh, that's too bad. You would have driven right by us. Next year we'll get together for sure. There is a Superstore in Summerside.

PEI is an amazing place. We just did the beach this time around and had a fabulous time at our campground. There is so much to see and do there. Kate...you should definitely go sometime.
