It's official...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2008: It's official...
By Dramamamma on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 - 05:00 pm:

I went to the doctor this afternoon and I'm officially having the hysterectomy five weeks after I have the baby. I have to sign the consents for sterility when I'm in my last month. My last pap came back abnormal AGAIN and we're done playing around...

Now that it's decided that Yes it's going to happen I'm a nervous wreck! I've never had ANY type of surgery. I'm going to try to keep my ovaries but the final decision won't be made on that until he is in there and looks around.

Wow, five weeks after?? If the pap came back bad, then you better get it done..

Don't be scared. It will all be okay and I am telling you that you will be much happier when it is all over... ***happy dance*** happy.

Are they doing it vaginally or through a C incision?

By Dramamamma on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 - 05:20 pm:

We didn't discuss it but I would think c-incision because that's what we discussed before but I'll be sure and ask next time I'm there. I didn't even think about asking...

Yea, 5 weeks after. We have to do it while I still have medicaid so that I can have the surgery.

Just out of curiosity, have you/your MD thought about delivering the baby by c-section and doing the surgery immediately after, then having your recovery all at once? I don't know if that would be easier on your body or not, but, suppose you needed a c-section anyway for some reason...would they want to re-open 5 weeks later? Just a thought....you are in our prayers and thoughts. Best of luck with everything!

Ditto Wendy - that was my thought too. Best of luck!!!!!

They will only do that in EXTREME emergencies, I asked about it when we first discussed the posibility of having it done. I figured why not do it all at once. But he quickly said no, you bleed WAY to much and the mortality rate increases drastically. I asked another doctor just out of curiosity and she agreed as well (not that I'd changed doctors).

If for some reason I do need a c-section I guess it's something we could talk about again but he seemed really against doing it that way.

When you have a baby, your uterus is big, and then has to clamp down tight, quickly. When the placenta breaks away, it leaves a pretty big wound. I would think that would have to be good and done bleeding, before the hysterectomy could be done. There's enough bleeding after a normal childbirth, even with a c-section. I would think it would be hard to do the hysterectomy right after, unless you absolutely had to. (But, remember, I'm not an OB-GYN doctor.)

You are right Dawn, that is pretty much what he said. He said the only time they do them during a c-section is during emergencies.

I requested some rather large polyps be removed after my son was delivered, and they told me the same thing about "too much bleeding" and a VERY high risk. So, seems to be the reason for any type of "cutting/removal" immediately after birth.

I still have my polyps BTW. Haven't thought about them since delivery, guess I should check them out again...it's been 3 years now.

So glad you will have the surgery done, and that it will be covered. Consider it a huge blessing!

(((Christy))) My first thought was right after birth too, but the reasoning makes sense. Good luck, honey!!!
