FRAUD E-MAIL ALERT Tax Stimulus

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2008: FRAUD E-MAIL ALERT Tax Stimulus
By Ginny~moderator on Saturday, June 14, 2008 - 09:19 am:

Others have posted about this but it doesn't hurt to repeat it. I just got an email telling me that I am entitled to the Tax Stimulus Refund, complete with Internal Revenue Service header, and telling me to "click here" to fill out a form to have the tax stimulus check deposited to my bank account - which would, of course, mean giving my bank account information.

Neither the IRS nor the U.S. government sends emails asking for identifying information to be provided by e-mail. Responding to the "click here" in such an e-mail and providing the information it requests means you are providing information that will lead to identity theft and probably actual theft from your bank account.

It is not only government agencies that do NOT send emails requesting identifying information. Your bank, credit card companies, creditors, e-Bay, any entity with which you have financial dealings - none of them will request this information by e-mail or telephone. All will send you a letter telling you to contact them.

ALWAYS BE ALERT TO POTENTIAL EMAIL FRAUD.
