"Green" gift

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2008: "Green" gift

Our Girl Scout troop is putting together a gift for our leader. We are doing a "Green" gift. She is very environmentally conscience and loves working in the garden and doing whatever she can to help preserve the planet. I need some ideas. There is a book that she mentioned she wants so we are getting that, I am purchasing a canvas bag to put all of the items in. There is a local store that sells items for recycling and such that she loves, they sell this paper made from elephant poo and I thought I would buy her some of that. I am going to tuck a few CFL lightbulbs in there. What other ideas do you have?

A tree, buy a small evergreen that she can plant, you should be able to find a very small one at a garden center. An aluminium water bottle, not the hard clear plastic ones, they contain BPA. An organic hemp tee-shirt. A resuable shopping bag.

That's all I can think of for now.

What about body care products. Our local GNC carries products that are all Organic, for example, Dr. Bronner's is one organic manufacturer that comes to mind. GNC carries organic soap, lotion, sunblock (which with it being summer would be a good idea), lip balm and that type of stuff.

Does she drink coffee, you could buy her a reusable mug from the place she gets coffee from. A room mother did this for one of my girls "green" teachers. She bought a reusable mug from the coffee shop the teacher is known for carrying around cups from and a gift card for 10 coffee's.

We have a place in town that sells all natural smoothies, Jump n Juice and Java, they use recycled paper and plastic products.

I love the idea of the reusable grocery shopping bags and have thought about using them myself.

So this is an odd one, but in my effort to use less paper, i bought a small dry erase board to make my grocery/shopping list on. Also we use mostly cloth napkins. My inlaws have started using individual towels for their guest bathroom. They found these great towels, they roll them and then have a hamper for them.

What about bamboo products, they make shirts, etc. Very eco friendly.

I got a super cute lunch tote on ebay for cheap, the kind that look like a purse. They sell matching water bottles for some of them that way you aren't using plastic bottles or paper bags.

Ditto on the reusable shopping bags, I have around 15v of them, and love them (The only downside is remembering to put them back in the truck so I use them!!) Does she work full time? there is a resuable sandwich bag I want to get for the kids, it comes in all sorts of designs for kids and adults. This is a big issue for me, because with 2 lunches to pack every day, we use a LOT of plastic baggies!! The organic/natural body products is a great suggestion as well. Have fun with it!

Thank you so much ladies. I love your ideas. I will head out today and see what goodies I can get! Thanks. If you think of any more ideas, keep them coming. I have a week until I have to give her the gift.
