My ER adventrure

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2008: My ER adventrure
By Dawnk777 on Saturday, May 31, 2008 - 11:36 am:

I was dizzy all day yesterday. It always looked and felt like the room was spinning. After I got home from my lunchlady job, I started throwing and didn't stop all afternoon, even after there was nothing left to throw up! Around 10pm, I tried drinking some Gatorade and thought life was better. When DH got home from work, I told him I needed to be checked out, to see why I was so dizzy, and because I hadn't kept anything down.

So, we travel to the ER. I get sick one last time, while signing in. We get into a room, within about 15 minutes or so, with a nurse taking my bp and initial assessment in a triage room. The doctor comes in a short while later, to say they are going to start in IV and give me some meds for the dizziness and nausea.

So, a tech comes in to start the IV and I barely felt it. She was good! She also took some blood. They never told me what they were checking, but I'm pretty sure that 2 of the tubes were for a CBC and some sort of metabolic panel. I'm not sure what the third one would have been.

Then the nurse comes in to give me Zofran and Valium. I'm with all of you now, that say that Zofran is a wonder drug! Between that and the Valium controlling the dizziness, I felt like a new woman.

My labs must have come back fine, since the nurse came in to take out the IV, when I'd had about 500cc out of a 1000cc bag. I was sent home with anti-nausea suppositories and some Meclizine (Anti-vert) to control the vertigo.

So far, I've kept down jello today, without any problems. When I first got up, I still had a little dizziness, but that seems to be getting better the longer I'm up.

We were supposed to go to the Milwaukee Museum today, to see Body Worlds, but I stayed home. I really haven't had much to eat yet and the dizziness was still there, when I got up, so just Gary and the kids went.

I wanted to see the body thing, but I find I'm really enjoying the peace and quiet of this empty house! (well, except for the tv, that DH forgot to turn off this morning!)

They figured it was the stomach flu, which it probably was. I had problems with extreme dizziness once when Sarah was a baby. I got Meclizine that time, too. Probably just an inner ear thing.

UGH! I hope you feel better soon, Dawn! Yes, Zofran is a miracle drug - make sure you check your detailed bill to see how much your insurance co. was billed for that little dose of miracle! LOL It will shock you. Take care of YOU today!

BTW, how long is the wait time in your local ER's, before you are actually seen????

By Nicki on Saturday, May 31, 2008 - 01:11 pm:

How terrible for you, Dawn. I'm glad you are doing a bit better, today.

A friend of mine had dizziness just as you described. She said it was one of the worst experiences. She went as far to say having a baby was easier!

Enjoy your peace and quiet. I hope you're feeling much better soon.

You've had quite the adventure--and a rough one! I hope you are resting today and feeling better. Yes, I loved Zofran! It is shocking how much it costs! I'm glad it helped you. *feel better*

I tried to drive today, and got to the end of my driveway and got dizzy turning my head to check for traffic. I put the car back in the garage. Argh.

I don't have much experience with my local ER, but last night, we got there about 11:30 and were completely done, by 2am. We didn't wait all that long, in the beginning, though, maybe 15 minutes.

I'll keep you posted on the cost of Zofran, when we get the bill.

Dawn, how crazy! I had this same problem yesterday and was worried that it was sun poisoning or something because it happened after a day at the pool. I suddenly got very woozy and sick to my stomach and threw up. I couldn't get up without feeling this way. I drank a couple glasses of gatorade thinking maybe I was dehydrated because this came on totally with no warning. Thought everything was well till I got up again and went through the same thing.

This morning was just as bad and my little boy got up to get ready for his last day of school. He came in from brushing his teeth and told me he felt really woozy and almost threw up all of a sudden. He hadn't heard me even talk about it, so I knew he really felt it. And I knew exactly what he was talking about. He had to miss today, his last day of school and was SO upset!

I have not been off the couch much at all today, except to use the bathroom. This is the first time I've attempted to sit at the computer.

To top it all off, I got sunburned all over yesterday, even though I used sunblock, and am miserable with that, too!

I hate that you feel so badly, but I'm relieved to hear it is a virus going around!

Yeah, it's much better. I did eat supper tonight, but I filled up really fast. If I turn my head too fast, I still get a little woozy, but that even seems a little better than this afternoon.

I feel like I'm grounded, since I can't (or shouldn't) drive! We still need to buy Emily some thank-you notes, for her confirmation presents and I was going to do that today. It will have to wait until tomorrow, when DH is home to drive.

The kids needed some stuff from the store, but we only live a few blocks away, so they walked there. Emily and I both knit some market bags, so the kids used those to carry the groceries home.

I'm glad you are on the mend and hope that you are completely well soon!

The market bags are really pretty!

Glad you are starting to feel better. Zofran is wonderful. There is now a generic, which is a LOT cheaper than the name brand which we paid about $25/pill for.

By Rayanne on Monday, June 2, 2008 - 01:04 pm:

I'm glad you are feeling better sweetie.

By Happynerdmom on Monday, June 2, 2008 - 01:43 pm:

Hope you're feeling good today. Sounds yucky!

By Dawnk777 on Monday, June 2, 2008 - 03:23 pm:

I'm finally not dizzy today. I'm so glad. At least the nausea was better by early Saturday morning. I took it easy yesterday and the kids planted a bunch of the flower seeds, so I'm happy about that.

Thanks, Tunnia. I think the market bags are pretty cool, too.

By Karen~admin on Monday, June 2, 2008 - 03:37 pm:

Breann, I'm taking the generic, my monthly Rx of GENERIC 30 pills costs over $900. Of course, I pay a $15 copay, but obviously my insurance rates are going to go up when this drug alone is costing nearly $12,000 a year! It is ridiculous.
