$$$ Stress!!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2008: $$$ Stress!!
By Reds9298 on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 - 02:57 pm:

Okay, need to have a major vent here!

Our house is up for sale due to a job change. We knew we had some crawl space repairs to do (just to pass inspection when it was time). We did that at $3300. Notice a few weeks ago that our water pressure was getting worse and worse. Spent about $1000 in the last 5days trying to fix/determine what was up with that. (We live in the country and are on a well.) At the end of all that water trouble, today I find out that we need a NEW WELL!!! We need to drill a NEW well! The drilling alone is about $2500, plus the lines and man power. I'm like a deer in headlights today since I heard that news, trying to fathom spending around $9000 cash on a house that I'm not going to be in for the long haul AND that I'm trying to sell in a terrible market. DH is commuting 3 hrs/day right now, totaling about $700/mth for his gas bill alone.

I'm thinking about going out in the backyard and screaming for a while. :(

On top of that, we have had really positive feedback on our home showings (about 10 or so) plus a great open house, yet no offers yet. We, along with our realtor, feel like we're starting it low to begin with - not too much more than we paid for it 9 years ago. This house has literally had EVERYTHING done to it in the last 10 years. New owners will at most have to paint, and one bathroom is somewhat outdated, but neutral. I'm so worried that having the yard worked on to drill a new well will be real estate suicide, although our realtor doesn't think so. Whoever gets this house is going to get one HELL of a deal, while I'm sitting in my new one bedroom shack in the poor house.

Yes, I'm frustrated. Thanks for letting me vent!

awww, I'm sorry. I hope things get better soon for you guys.

I'm so sorry! Yikes! That does sound pretty stressful. Just remember to breathe!

By Vicki on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 - 05:55 pm:

Oh my!! It would be one thing if you were going to stay there...but man, that really stinks. And it isn't like it is going to add value to the home or anything because you are supposed to have water. LOL

I thought my SIL once had a problem and they just dug deeper and all was fine again... I take it that isn't an option for you since you are talking all new lines etc?

By Amecmom on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 - 06:23 pm:

Oh Deanna, that stinks.

I am SO sorry. That's just awful. I sure hope everything works out...

By Reds9298 on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 - 08:23 pm:

Vicki-exactly! If we were staying it would be a pain but ultimately okay. Yes, all new lines. Ours are corroded with rust and iron build up, in addition to the fact that we're being told it wasn't a good well to begin with when it was put in around 30 years ago.

Thanks guys...I'm breathing a little deeper since talking to DH about it more. It stinks, but I think we have to do it. The pressure is better since they did the work they've done so far, but running 2 things at once isn't good at all (i.e.,flush the toilet and run the faucet at the same time). We're getting the full estimate tomorrow, and then I might be hyperventilating again.

((((Hugs)))) I'm sorry you are going through this, I know how stressful money issues can be, and with your DH commuting so far it's extra hard.

Deanna, I would also really reccommend getting a second quote and evaluation. We have an ac guy in our neighborhood who came out and ended up replacing several units for quite a bit of money. Mine went out, I called a different person due to my insurance. Well that guy said, oh yeah, they are known for that. I had a blown capacitor and it has worked fine since. So you just never really know who is honest and who is just out to make money.

And ((hugs)), we had a similar situation selling our house in cincy. I hate spending money on a house on the market!

By Reds9298 on Thursday, May 29, 2008 - 09:21 pm:

Kaye- Yes! Your'e so right about the second opinon.
At any rate, there's good news. I never even checked the water after the $1200 worth of work they did yesterday. Once I started checking and we all started showering lastnight, we are NOT getting a new well! The water is working great, regardless of what they are telling me. If it's only pumping 3 gal/min, then I don't want more because the shower is blowing us out now. We are running multiple things at once with very little reduction in pressure. I'm thinking now about how they were telling me from the get-go (from their records from 15 years ago)that "this isn't a good well to begin with so it's best to get a new one".

Everything seems to be in working order now, so I feel a huge relief. The crawl work was enough to be frustrating in itself, especially when half of it should have been done when we bought it. (long story) The place that we're working with on the water has been around the longest and is supposed to be "honest", but at the end of the day, they *are* in the business of drilling wells.

If we have any more problems, I WILL get a second opinion before I do anything else. Ditto- It is so crappy to spend $ on a house on the market! For now though, I feel like I made $4000!!

I'm glad it seems to be better now.

By Luvn29 on Friday, May 30, 2008 - 08:06 am:

Wow, doesn't it feel great to have something go your way like that? I'm so glad that as of now you aren't going to have to pay out all that money, not to mention the aggravation of having a new well dug!

By Happynerdmom on Friday, May 30, 2008 - 08:13 am:

Yay! :)

By Kaye on Friday, May 30, 2008 - 08:28 am:

Good news! I hope the house sells quickly. It is the pits having your house on the market! My last house was on the market for 58 days, we had 65 shows, it was soo soo frustrating. We were well below it's value.

By Rayelle on Friday, May 30, 2008 - 04:22 pm:

Wow what a relief! I'm glad that isn't an immediate concern for you anymore.

By Paulas on Sunday, June 1, 2008 - 09:22 am:

What a relief! I know how frustrating it can be when your home isn't selling as quickly as you want, or need, it to be...without all the extra expenses. I hope someone comes along and buys it soon.

By Juli4 on Monday, June 2, 2008 - 07:23 pm:

We are in the same boat house wise. Our price has dropped to so close to what we paid for it with major remodel done in the last 2 years. It is ridiculous. We need to get rid of it, but can't. It is an endless frustration. people say they like it, but no one is willing to pull the trigger and buy it. It is a common problem in our area.
