Mental Detox Week
This is where we all turn off the tv and ipods and internet and puters and anythign else and gets back to old fashioned fun. http://www.adbusters.org/metas/psycho/mdw/ btw known and turn off tv week too
Pamt does that every year - she's been doing it for a while, though I believe she has her media free month in the summer sometime. :-)
We cancel our cable subscription every spring, it's gone and won't be back until the fall. Yahoo!
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.............with my current situation, I think I'd go berserk without my electronics. LOL! It's difficult to even hold a book to read, something I did not foresee - I bought a dozen books to read durng recovery. And now, my Dr. has ordered me off the computer - specifically the keyboard - so cable, Ipod and READING Momsview and other sites are going to be my pasttimes for now. HOWEVER - especially with kids - I fully support the media free weeks or months - Pamt has attested to the success of it in her own family over and over - she has said it makes her boys' imaginations blossom, they spend much more quality family time together and get a lot of household and other projects completed together. Alrightee.........this is twice already today I've been disobeying, so off the computer for me.
KAREN?! Shame on you. LOL! I don't think it would fly in my family. The kids and I could make do, but DH needs his PC and Internet access for work.
Chai, what kind of internet connection do you have? I suppose we could cancel the tv part of the cable, but our internet comes through the cable, too! We probably spend more time on the computer, than we do watching TV. Although lately, I've been so busy with other stuff, that computer time has been limited, too.
I'm on DSL for internet and cable for well cable. LOL We don't as of yet have a strong internet addiction so the computer is still on, I'm the only one that uses it and it's in the basement so I'm not on often. The kids are allowed to watch DVDs occasionally like when I'm trying to make dinner, but no tv for anyone until the fall. DH is not thrilled, it's hockey playoffs but he can always go next door and watch the game if his team is playing. And well if there is no hockey we can also go to bed early. I'm not inflexible I'm just sick of the tv and all the things that don't get done because of it. The cable company never charges us a re-hook fee so it's not a big deal to reconnect in the fall.
Dd watches some tv, but she likes it more for backround noise I find. She has gotten her tv, computer, ipod etc taken away before for getting herself into trouble. The first couple of days were painful for me. LOL But about day 3, she seemed to adjust to it just fine and find other things to do! It actually is nice!
Well, sometimes I wish I could FORCE my kids to watch television! LOL! I've never had a problem with tv getting in the way of life, fortunately, because none of us feel like there is anything we HAVE to watch. If the weather is good, we are all outside till late in the evening when it's time to wind down for bed. If it isn't, then we are usually reading or the kids are playing games or my ds loves to play with his pokemon toys--little action figure like things! I've been very lucky in that my kids are not hooked on video games, computer or anything. We all like it, but it's nothing that we feel like we can't live without. However, I do think I would go crazy without television because I just like having it on when I want it on. And dh and I do get into certain reality things such as DWTS, Big Brother, and American Idol. I really look forward to watching "our" shows even we always record them and watch them right before bed.
I'd like to try this this summer. We did good about actually DOING things last summer but right now I need the computer for school. Oh well, almost the end of the semester .
Brendan and I have went without cable for the last 3 years and only recently gotten it when Jason moved in. Now that Jason is moving out I can honestly say I will NOT miss the cable, I like evenings without tv. Occasionally we will watch a movie but other than that we do without.
The chances of me doing a media free week let alone a month is SLIM to NONE!! I feel like we have really great quality time together on most days, as a family and individuals, so it doesn't really bother me that we have a computer and TV's. It's not the main focus of our day(s) by any stretch - we're always "doing" things. We watch about an hour of TV each per day, with computer dabbling throughout. No serious surfers here, just here and there. It's mostly a means for keeping in touch. Enjoy detoxing though!
