Not Fifths disease afterall...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2008: Not Fifths disease afterall...

Something in my gut told me to go ahead and take dd to the Doctor yesterday. It's strep! The doctor said right away that it wasn't fifth's just by the texture of the face rash and thought maybe she was having an allergic reaction to something. Then she said that sometimes strep shows as a bright red rash. So, she did the rapid strep test and it came back positive right away. So little one is home today on antibiotics for the next 10 days and I'm hoping no one else in the house gets it.

My daughter gets that when she has strep. It is actually scarlet fever.

Emily had a little red spot on her cheek, with strep throat, when she was about 4 years old. They just called it cellulitis, though. It all got better with antibiotics. She never complained of a sore throat, though. I had no clue she could possibly have strep, other than the spot on her cheek.

The rash doesn't look any better yet. She slept from 8:30 last night until 8:30 this morning. She says she feels just OK. Her stomach is upset and she has had diarrhea this morning but that could just as easily be from the antibiotic. The rash is currently only on her cheeks, it hasn't spread anywhere else. I hope she can go back to school tomorrow but at this point I really don't know that she can.
