GREENSBURG, Pa. -- An 18-year-old Greensburg man has been charged with raping a baby who police said was left in his care.

Police said Scott Wade Smith raped his girlfriend's 5-month-old girl Friday morning at a home in the 500 block of Highland Avenue, where several people, including the infant's mother, were living.

Authorities said the infant suffered severe injuries and was flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where surgery was performed.
Police said the girl was crying so hard she nearly stopped breathing.

According to police, Smith made a story about the baby choking on a crayon, but paramedics didn't find anything in her throat. So, they decided to take her to Westmoreland Hospital, which is where doctors found blood inside her diaper.

"Doctors immediately notified Greensburg police, who headed to the house with a search warrant," said Capt. George Seranko of the Greensburg Police Department.

There, police said they found a blood-soaked towel in a box in Smith's bedroom, along with four red-stained baby wipes.

The mother was in class at her high school when the alleged attack occurred, police said.

Smith was charged with five felonies, including rape of a child, causing seriously bodily injury, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and endangering the welfare of children. He is being held at the Westmoreland County Prison on $1 million bail.

Police said rape of a child with serious bodily injury under the age of 13 is punishable by life in prison, and they are asking the district attorney to push for that sentence.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday. It's unknown whether Smith has a lawyer yet.

A sick person like that doesn't deserve the air he breathes. I hope they DO get the maximum (life in prison) for him. He should not be allowed to roam free in society.

I TOTALLY agree with you AME !! But they say that when a child molester goes to prison,the other inmates kill them. He deserves to be brutaly attacked. The pain that that baby went through !!!!!

In an update at that other site, the baby has survived so far and will be having more surgeries. I don't think charges have been made against the mom, but I could be wrong. I only read a few of the post. It's not the type of board you can read much on for very long.

I just noticed the "man's" age. A mere 18, still really only a boy himself. He must have one messed up life to have gotten to this place in life.

OMG I've got goosebumps, that poor little baby. My neighbor's dd is 5 months old and I was just holding her last night. I can't imagine anyone doing that to her.

He should rot in prison for the rest of his life....or until the other inmates kill him.

How heartbreaking. That poor baby girl. I hope he gets a life sentence because as evil as prisoners may be, they aren't very nice to rapists. Especially those who rape innocent infants.

Greensburg Man Charged

this is beyond sick.. The only way they (the prisoners) will get him is if he is placed in general population. Likely he will be in protective custody, solitary confinement. They will do everything they can to make sure he is around to stand on the charges. After that... It will be up to the institution he is sent to (and the judge) as to whether he will be in general population or high security.

Likely he will take his own life before the inmates get him.

OMG, there is an article on that link about a 30 year old from HONOLULU. "Friddle is charged with committing several sexual acts on the baby when it was about 6 months old and again six months later. He is also charged with videotaping the assaults." What the heck..

What the heck is going on lately? We have just had two child molesters arrested in our small town recently (two different cases). Another one just got out of prison after serving seven years and committed suicide in one of the local cemetaries.
