Tulip sprouts!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive March 2008: Tulip sprouts!

The snow has all melted on the south side of my house, where the tulips grow! I didn't have a chance to take a picture tonight. The sun was setting and it would have been horrible! I'll try to take one tomorrow. I'm so happy!

Last year, my daffodils in this spot, didn't look too happy and now they don't seem to be coming up. Bummer. Must mean another online order to the bulb place I ordered from before, where I got BEEFY tulips and daffodils.

I tried planting new hyacinths, by my back porch and then last year's weather was weird, so some of them didn't come up and only one bloomed, but didn't get very tall. :( I don't see anything there, yet, but it's early yet. It's hard to wait.

Oh yeah, we had temps in the 50's! Woohoo!

What bulb place do you order from? I am getting serious about planting some more bulbs now that I know where our new driveway is going to go.

I have had very good results with getting bulbs from Dutch Gardens. I've used them for years and never a bad bulb. And, most of their bulbs are "king size". I find their prices reasonable, even comparing with the local Home Depot or KMart garden supply stuff.

I'm surprised about your daffs, Dawn. Daffs are very tolerant, and tend to multiply like crazy in most places. Did you have them deep enough. One thing, if you have squirrels, they do like to dig up and eat bulbs. I found that if you put chicken wire in the dirt, bending the edges down to dig in firmly, the plants manage to come up very nicely in the chicken wire holes but the squirrels won't try to dig through it.

Dutch Gardens

I was REALLY happy with the stuff I got from them last year. The tulips and daffodils had big, strong stems and the flowers were beautiful! I can tell which ones they are, even at this sprout stage, because they are BIG!

I'll have to look for last year's pictures, later.

It's okay, Ginny. They were just local bulbs and were never very sturdy to begin with. I love Dutch Gardens and will order some for this fall.

May 2007 - Look how sturdy those tulips are! They were gorgeous in real life! I'm sure these are sprouting, but there's still too much snow over there, to look!

I'm very much further south than you are, and my tulips have just gotten about 4 inches tall. Our daffodils are in full bloom, but our son in PA says theirs are just beginning to show. Just wait. You may have a beautiful garden yet this spring. Hyacinths sometimes take a few years to adapt. Watch for them this year. They should come up better.
