A reminder
The news of Heath Ledger's will not being updated to reflect his daughter and her mother should serve as a reminder to all of us to update our wills and other documents. I know mine is terribly outdated, and unfortunately, tragedy CAN strike any of us. I'm glad to see the Ledger family is vowing to care for young Matilda, but it could have gotten very ugly for everyone involved, had they not.
I think it's ridiculous how the media makes the headline "Nothing in Heath Ledger's Will to Cover Michelle and Matilda", when that's misleading. You have to go on to read that his will was simply not updated. Good reminder for all of us.
I suspect that even if Ledger's family had not publicly stated they would care for his daughter, the state would have made sure the child was cared for. There are laws in every state about inheritance and usually a child born after a will was made is assumed to be a beneficiary of the estate (even if the parents weren't married). It might have taken a lawsuit if Ledger's parents hadn't stepped up, but it would have been resolved fairly quickly.
