We are going to NYC!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2008: We are going to NYC!
By Bellajoe on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 05:33 pm:

My dh and I celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary this summer. Last night he sort of surprised me by telling me he was planning a trip for the two of us to go to New York City for our anniversary. He booked the trip last night.
I was surprised because he had told me before that we were not doing anything for our anniversary because we were going to Disney this summer, so we wouldn't have any money to do anything else. I don't know what changed his mind, but I'm glad he did!

We are staying near Battery Park. I don't really know much about what there is to do in NYC other than shop, sight see and theatres. We really are not interested in going to see a show.
I don't know about where things are and how close or far apart things are. We only have the weekend, and it's such a huge city.

Does anyone have any tips on what not to miss, and what sounds great but really isn't a big deal?

My brother in law said that Times Square isn't that big a deal, but then a girl at work told me that i HAD to see Times Square! LOL I would like to see it, just to see it and say I've been there :)
We are definitely going to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Those are 2 things we both want to do (and agree on!!).

Any tips or places not to miss would be greatly appreciated!

Wow that sounds so fun! We are hoping to be able to do something special for our 10th this year. When is your anniversary date? I've never been to NYC but my sil and bil went a few years ago and said it was great. My bil wanted a piece of real New York cheesecake even if it was $16!

By Bellajoe on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 07:14 pm:

$16 for a piece of cheesecake? It better have been REALLY good cheesecake!

Our anniv. date is July 11th. When is yours

DH (from Long Island) says go to Juniors for cheesecake. LOL He's been gone for 25+ years, so he's not really *up* on what-to-do there anymore.

You definitely need to go to Times Square. Also go to Central Park. My DH goes there for business several times a year and we took our kids there this past fall and did the touristy stuff. Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, the sight of the Twin Towers (emotional even for the kids). Go to a Yankees game, go to the U.N., Museum of Modern Art, go shopping at the largest Macy's in the world, biggest Toy's R'Us, M&M World, F.A.O. Schwartz, American Girl.... with or without the kids these are fun places to go. We also went to Chinatown, it's was fun but kind of weird. There is a ton to do! It's a fun city. It is so easy to get around with the subway. Have fun!

How fun!!!

We went a few years ago with the kids, but my brother was living there, so we had a guide!!

It is easy to take a taxi there. We took the subway, but my brother took it all the time, and knew how it worked. We probably wouldn't have taken it without him.

We loved Central park. But, remember it does get really hot there in the summer. We went in April, and the weather was beautiful. We also went to the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. We did go to Times Square. It is pretty cool at night when it is all lit up. We also went to Toys R Us. it is huge!! We did the museum of Natural History, which my dks loved. I thought it was pretty cool too.

I can't think of anything else.

That sounds wonderful and will be so much fun!!
Our 10th is in a couple of weeks (March 7), but we're going to do something later in the year when the weather is better everywhere, LOL! We are still trying to decide where to go, as we also are taking a Disney trip around Christmas so we are budgeting for both trips.

Congrats on your 10th and yay for you!

Yes, if you've never seen it, I would definitely see Times Square - at night. All of the neon lights and bustling activity gives you an indescribable feeling - if you like that sort of thing, I suppose. :) If you like corn beef sandwiches, I would try the world famous Carnegie Deli. Yes it's a tourist trap but it's sooo good. We always make it a point to eat there every trip. Just make sure you order only one sandwich as it's huge and you can order addt'l bread. Have fun!

Have fun!

Sounds great! Never been there, but I know I would want to take a ride through Central Park.

Our 10th anniversary is May 16th! Lots of tenths around here! We aren't doing anything though because we will be moving to SC that month or the next! That's celebration enough for me!

July 11th!!!! Ours is July 10th! :) We got married on a Friday evening since dh hadn't been at his job for long and didn't have anytime to take off, that way we had the weekend together.

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 - 09:38 pm:

Hey that's so cool that we *almost* share are anniversary!

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 - 09:45 pm:

Have a wonderful time!
We are going on a cruise for our 15th anniversary, this year. I think it is fun to vacation on your anniversary.
You can order Juniors cheesecake to be delivered straight to your home :)
How long are you going for? That will really determine what you should do/see with the time you have. Personally, I would want to see a broadway show.

I used to live in the City, but have moved about an hour away by train. Since having the kids I really haven't been back too often.
Manhattan is "small" big city. You can walk everywhere in a relatively short amount of time.
What I miss most is the Village, the Museum of Natural History, the Met (both the museum and the opera house :)).
Time's Square is cool. For a really romantic dinner go to One if by Land, Two if by Sea in the Village. It is the most romantic restaurant in the city!
If you go to Broadway at night just to see Time's Square and all the Marquees lit up, then you can go to the rooftop restaurant atop the Marriot Marquis hotel for dessert or drinks. It revolves and gives you a great view of the City.
I also miss brunch at the Plaza Hotel. They had the best, most expansive brunch! Expensive, too - years ago I think it was $75 a person - have no clue what it is now - but so cool!
The shop windows on 5th Avenue are spectacular - great fun.
I don't have fond memories of Junior's cheesecake. I do recall a great French restaurant called Le Rivage in the theatre district that had yummy deserts - oh, also Serendipity - fun, yummy food.
Stay away from big name places (Russian Tea Room, Tavern on the Green, etc). Go to more local places and you'll get a better deal and better service. Call ahead and make reservations.
Spend a day just walking around and enjoying the City, if you can.
I wouldn't go nuts shopping. You can find everything you could possibly want on the internet and at much better prices - best of all you dont need to carry it around.
If you don't want to see a show, how about dinner and some music? There are several restaurants that have great shows along with dinner. If you like Jazz, go to the Iridium or one of the other Jazz clubs.
If I think of anything, I 'll add it.
Ame

wow, those are some great tips! Thank you!

One if by land, two if by sea looks beautiful. If we don't do dinner there, perhaps we will do brunch!
