Miracle stain remover?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2008: Miracle stain remover?
By Tarable on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 - 11:54 am:

Does anyone have a miracle stain remover that will remove blood from clothes? My dd got blood on her favorite pair of jeans and it is one the leg and very noticable. She is EXTREMELY upset and I am trying to find a way to get it out without ruining her jeans. I have tried shout and regular detergent just sitting then washing.. but haven't dried it yet.

HELP!!! my dd will love you forever if you can help me get this out of her jeans.

Oh, try hydrogen peroxide. I tried it on the carpet when my ds got a blood nose one night. It worked real well. (It was kinda dry when I discovered the spots.)

Sorry, make that at a bloody nose.

What ever you do, don't put them into the dryer! As long as you don't dry them, you can keep trying things! The dryer pretty much sets it in on almost all fabrics!

I soaked something with blood on it in a sink full of oxy clean and water. I let it sit for hours and the blood came out completely. Oxy clean is that odd granular stuff that doesn't seem to dissolve well, but I first scrubbed the grains on the spot itself, then swirled it all thruout the water. Eventually much of it dissolves, but you'll still see some grains. Every so often I would go in and rub the grains on the stain some more, and then push the fabric back so that it is underneath the water entirely. You can hold it down with a rock or something if you need to. Good luck!

I will try the oxyclean.. and if that doesn't work I will try the peroxide...

Thanks.

I second the Oxyclean.

Carbona makes a blood stain remover. I buy it at Joann Fabrics. My daughter gets many bloody noses and her pillowcase would like pretty gross without it! It gets the blood out every time.

I've used Nursery Stain Remover and Oxy Clean with great success on blood.

I bought something called Pink Solution, and it can remove anything! I'm not sure if you can get it in the states, but here's a link...

OxyClean IS hydrogen peroxide. That's why they tell you to NEVER use bleach when you use it in the same wash. It can give off toxic fumes.

I have always had good luck soaking the item in COLD water and a little dish detergent or laundry detergent. OxyClean does work very well, too.

Ditto on not using the dryer. Once you put heat to it, the protein in the blood sets the stain permanently.

I put bleach and OxyClean in my whites all the time, never knew I wasn't supposed to. I thought it was just bleach and ammonia that couldn't mix.

Mixing bleach and hyrdogen peroxide

It's an experiment you can do with your kids.

You can watch them do it, too. It REALLY bubbles for a bit!

The reaction between bleach and hydrogen peroxide is a decomposition reaction. Hydrogen peroxide is what is known as an unstable substance, meaning that it breaks up by itself. The bleach is called a catalyst.

So, as you can see in the reaction when the bleach is poured in, the hydrogen peroxide decomposes into its base elements, but not completely. What you have left is water and oxygen, because hydrogen peroxide is in general terms a water molecule with and extra oxygen, and so, when it breaks up, it loses that extra oxygen.

So basically, I'm deactivating the OxyClean by adding bleach to it? Interesting!!!

Something like that! LOL!
