Medical Transcription from home?
I am really looking for something that I can do at home so that I don't have to find daycare for my preschool aged kids. Is medical transcription from home really an option for someone who has no experience with it? There was a post about a year ago that listed some on line education programs for this http://www.momsview.com/discus/messages/41/21353.html and I'm wondering if anyone has enrolled in any or any like them and been succesful at becoming employed from home?
I looked into it but since my typing skills can be classified as "hunt and peck" I would have to get my skills to a higher average. I think the minimal requirement is something like 75 wpm. I could stand corrected. I also checked out some online classes and local classes, all would cost about $2500. plus the cost of the equipment for the house. If I could type I would have pursued it further. My friend does legal transcribe work from home for local lawyers and loves the freedom of hours plus the pay. The more you put out the more $ you take in. Hope this helps a bit.
Bubbels (Pam) here at MV is a Medical Transcriptionist. DH's sister has been one for many years. From what I understand it's not something you can pick up quickly. There is special training, and besides requiring fast and accurate typing skills you need to *know* medical terminology inside and out. DH's sister can type 120 wpm. Yikes!
Tammie, as Trina said, I've been doing this for many years (20+ years) and earn an excellent income from it. But it did take some time to reach this point, probably a good year before I was "flying" without having to stop and look up words every few minutes. It's strictly a process of elimination, but if you can hang in there patiently for that first year, it'll be well worth it. Probably any of the courses listed in the other post would work just fine. Choosing the right one for you would depend on cost, available financing options, time convenience, and those sorts of things. So in answer to your question, can anyone be successful at it? ... ABSOLUTELY. You just have to go through the training and several months of breaking into your new job where the going may be slow for a while, but you'll soon have an extremely interesting job you can do at home that allows you to earn the same salary or more as you would working outside the house (without all the costs of clothes, gas, lunch, childcare, etc. associated with working out.)
Thanks everyone! It sounds like it is doable...not easy but doable.
I'm a court reporting student and a lot of my fellow students do medical transcription. They said it was really hard at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's not that bad.
