C-section question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2004: C-section question
By Ladypeacek on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 03:22 pm:

Well i am having the scheduled csection..i will get the exact date tomorrow. I had one with my daughter but it was an emergency one and i was knocked out during it. I was in the hospital for weeks due to other medical issues. Since this one is scheduled i will be awake through it. My question for anyone that had one without complications is how long befoer you were up and about without pain. I just need to get some kind of time frames cuz hubby will take leave to help me. He gets 10 days but he may take a little more since we have a 2 yr old..so how long before a newborn and a year old wont kill me alone..lol..thanks

By Colette on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 03:33 pm:

My first section was an emergency and my next 2 sections were both scheduled. A scheduled section is much easier to recover from than an emergency one. Probably because you don't go through labor as well as the section. I believe I was up and about within a week after coming home without pain. I was out of bed with pain meds within 24 hours. Have him take the 10 days and it should be plenty. How long do you stay in the hospital after the surgery?

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 03:45 pm:

10 days should be plenty. I stayed in the hospital 4 days after each of mine. (89 and 92). Both of them were unplanned c-sections, and the second one was more urgent then the first, but neither one was an emergency. I was just making no progress with labor. I would say that I was getting myself in and out of bed at the hospital without help after the first day or two. You just move more slowly. I lost less blood with the second one, during surgery, so I never felt as drained after her surgery as I did with the first one.

I haven't had a c-section, just wanted to wish you good luck!

I had an emergency c-section without labor and was awake for the surgery. I was up walking within 12 hours and begged the doctor to discharge me a day early. I was up and around without too much pain but I definitely moved much more slowly. I imagine that things would have been much more difficult with a toddler at home. I would talk with your doctor because you are supposed to be very careful about lifting for a while after the surgery. Good luck!

I had a scheduled c section with my second son, he was breech. I had a two year old at home also, and my recovery period was very fast. I too was awake during the surgery, didn't feel a thing, the worst part to me was the initial numbing sensation, as it moved from my toes up to my chest, it freaked me out because it felt like it was going to keep moving up to my neck and I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to breath! The anesthesiologist reassured me and said it's a common feeling. Anyways, I was up and walking about 9 hours afterward, and once I got home, I wasn't taking any pain meds at all, just meds for the terrible gas pains that come after having abdominal surgery. I even went shopping with my mom the day after I got home from the hospital! My husband was home with me to help with my then 2 yr old son for about a week, then I was on my own, and it was fine. Good luck and best wishes!

I was awake during my surgery as well, and only felt mild pressure as they cut and removed the babies. The worst part for me was them taking Madison out, because she was wedged transverse up in my rib cage, but that's only because her brother was breech. I was up and walking as soon as my spinal wore off. The sooner you walk the sooner you heal, or at least get to eat! Seriously though, as soon as I could feel my legs I started walking around the maternity ward, and I only spent 2.5 days in the hospital. Most of the reason I was even there that long was because the twins had trouble keeping their temps up. Once at home I was doing fine, only needed pain meds for a couple days, the only real pain I had after that was sitting up too quickly, pulling on my incision. My recovery was a breeze, but a big part of that was movement, if you lay in bed and do nothing the whole time you are in the hospital I think it takes a toll on you. (Of course, only do what your doctors say is OK, and what you feel comfortable with!)

I had a similar experience as the other ladies. I was up and about within 12 hours of the surgery and left the hospital after 3 days. I took the pain meds for about 3 days after that but I could certainly function. My dks are all two years apart so I had a two year old at home each time. The hardest thing was keeping them off my lap for the first couple of weeks. My dh took a week off and I was fine when he went back to work. Tired but able to function. Moving early and often was the biggest help. Good luck! I can't wait to see you post the big news!

I had a c-section with my 1st ds. It wasn't planned, but I really didn't go through much labor because they discovered he was breech early on. I had him close to midnight and I was up walking first thing the next morning. I would say that I was okay when I went home, but not pain free. It took about a week for all the pain to go away. My dh took 1-1/2 weeks off and I was just fine when he went back to work. I have heard from several people that the 2nd c-section is much easier. For some reason there is less pain. I had a VBAC with my 2nd, so I don't have first hand experience with this. I would think that you would be fine after 10 days when your dh goes back to work.

Good luck. I can't wait to see the birth announcement.

I was awake for both of mine. You feel some tugging and pulling. It was kind of a strange sensation.

By Marcia on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 08:56 pm:

I was knocked out for my section, because she was in distress. I was walking within the first 24 hrs. I went home to an almost 2 year old, was feeling pretty good after 10 days, and was running a full daycare again by the time 6 weeks had past.
Good luck! You'll be just fine!

Geez, I feel like such a wimp. It was REALLY difficult for me to recover and I stayed in the hospital for 3 days. I did 12 hours labor and then had a C-section that took a half hour.
The worst thing was getting up to go to the bathroom and I really needed my DH to help. I felt so bad asking a nurse to come and help me get to the bathroom every time. (I REALLY actually wanted them to leave the catheter IN so I wouldn't have to get up so much.)
I needed at least a week to feel confident enough to get in and out of bed by myself. I had lots of pain but I didn't want to take the prescription stuff, so the ibuprofen was fine.
10 days should be good...but, then again, I don't have a toddler getting into things!!! I would have him plan on 10 days and then after those 10 days, you can assess it further if you feel sane enough!!
I wish you the best and don't forget to take that Correctol!!! LOL!

Heidi, I was the opposite, I wanted that catheter OUT! I did have trouble going pee though, I would sit and actually be scared to pee, it took about three tries and a REALLY full bladder before I could make myself relax! And Kenna, my ex also had 10 days off, it was plenty for us.

THANK YOU so much ladies...i feel much better...with my first one i was sooo ill and i just want this to be fast recovery. I do feel much better now. My biggest concern was being able to care for my son. My daughter being 9 is helpful but she is in school during the day. I think he is still gonna take an extra week off just to spend some time with us cuz he has some use or lose time. I just would like to be sure i can manage before he goes back to work..now after reading you guys replies i feel much more reassured..thanks..i will let you know the date this afternoon!

By Brandy on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 06:53 am:

Oh Kenna i'm so excited to hear when your having your sweet baby = ) I dont' know anything about c-sections though ...

By Trina~moderator on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 07:43 am:

Both my kids were born via c-section. DS after 45 hrs. labor, DD scheduled. I was awake both times. The recovery for the scheduled cesarean was MUCH easier. I was up and walking around several hours afterwards but still tender for a couple weeks.

By Ladypeacek on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 09:10 am:

the date is January 11th. I will be there for 3 to 4 days they said. Dh will be getting 10 days permissive tdy and then he is using a week of leave so he will be home for 3 weeks. I know 13 more days is nothing but it feels like forever!!!!!

By Colette on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 09:15 am:

You'll be fine. The whole thing takes less than an hour and that sounds like a good amount of recovery time in the hospital. Good Luck!!

By Pamt on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 09:20 am:

No advice here, since I've never had a C-section, but plenty of well wishes. Can't wait to hear the big announcement!!! I'm sure it hasn't seemed fast to you, but your pregnancy has just flown by to me--LOL.

By Kernkate on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 01:45 pm:

Best of Luck Kenna:) I had 3 sections. The first one 19 years ago was an emergency one due to placenta previa so I was asleep for that. Recovery was a bit slower the first time for me. With #2 10 years ago I was up and moving around 12 hours after and was home in 4 days.
#3 4 years ago I was begging my doctor to let me go home the day after the section. And only took 4 tylenol for the pain.
My best advice is even if you are in pain and the nurses want to get you out of bed do it. Seems to me the faster you get moving the less pain I was in.
I think the worse pain I had after all 3 sections was gas pains from the surgery.
The 11th will be here before you know it.
