Synthetic thyroid replacement medication
My aunt, age 87, was prescribed Levoxyl (50 mg) and took it for only three days because she had serious side effects, including dizziness and distinct vision problems. Do you know of anyone experiencing similar side effects? I did some quick web research, and none of these side effects are listed. I told her to take the pills to her pharmacist and make sure they gave her the right pills. Her doctor told her to stop taking them, which she has. But, she recently had surgery to remove a goiter and one of her thyroid glands, and subsequent blood test showed a low thyroid level, so I am concerned.
Could it be a reaction to other meds she is taking, rather than a side effect directly from the Levoxyl?
I'm sorry. Let me be more specific (it's been a busy day!) Could her symptoms of dizziness be a result of the interaction of the Levoxyl with any other meds she is currently taking?
Dizziness and vision problems are also a sign/side effect of diabetes. Has she been tested for that?
I checked for possible interactions with the meds I know she is taking and no, there appears to be no interactions. She takes Neurontin for leg pains and has taken it for years; uses drops in her eyes as she is at risk for glaucoma and takes high blood pressure medication. Yes, she has been checked for everything - she had surgery in the summer for carpal tunnel and just a couple of months ago for the goiter, so she had all the presurgical workups. When her daughter returns from a trip to Alaska I'm going to have a long talk with her about it and maybe we can puzzle this out. I did read that there had been some problems with this particular generic brand of thyroid meds, and maybe the solution is a different brand.
