A long, interesting article.

Wow.

Wow, this is the first I've heard of this! Personally, I am glad that the law is for new buses and not to retrofit existing buses. We already have to pay $185 per child if we want our kids to ride the bus. If we had to retrofit the bus, I have a feeling we would end up having no bus service rather than pass on that added cost. As for the law itself, I was under the impression that it was actually safer for buses not to have seatbelts. Very interesting!

I think the idea behind seatbelts is valid, but I think what works in a car is a disaster waiting to happen for buses. The first time a bus rolls over and a child is left in hurt because they couldn't get in to get him out, i think this will be realized. typically children don't get thrown from buses, they do get tossed around (think of all the padding on those seats) and then when it stops rolling they are able to crawl out before it catches fire. I have thought they should have something similar to carnival rides, with the bar that comes down and locks into place, but the driver has a main switch to undo them all. Also lets think regular seatbelts. There is a good chance they will be used by bullies to hit and tie up classmates. Supervision on a bus is hard, the seats are tall and you cannot see what is going on. What a nightmare!

Kaye made some good points that I hadn't thought of.
I guess there are a lot of pros and cons to something like this.
I wonder what they'll do when someone sues because their child was hit in the face with a seatbelt and had their teeth knocked out. They could blame that on poor supervision with the seatbelts.
I drive my daughter to school. But she rides the bus for field trips. They have lap belts.
