A couple of cleaning questions

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2004: A couple of cleaning questions
By Juli4 on Sunday, December 12, 2004 - 06:41 pm:

ok first one is those of you who have stainless steel pans. Do you clean them with the soap pads that are steel wool and how does that work for you? What do you do about the little scratches that they leave?

The second one is I bought some solid color sheets and had them on my bed about 6 days. Took them off to wash them and they have what looks like grease spots on them from various things that I don't know how to get out. Do any of you know what I am talking about? Just little spots that are darker than the rest of the sheet. Hope that makes sense

I don't use the soap pads with soap in them, but use the curly steel wool or copper pads instead, and only on the outside of the pan and only when there is real crud. Otherwise, I use nylon scrubbing pads or a "Dobie" type pad on the inside and outside (as I said, unless there is real crud). I don't see scratches on the inside of the pans but eventually the bottom gets scratched a bit because I wind up having to use the steel scrubber when the bottom of the pan/pot gets dark stains on it.

For the sheets, I know exactly what you mean, and I use a spray on stain pre-treat. I recently bought one that is a gel and intend to try it soon. One thing, don't wash the sheets in hot water, as if the pre-treat and detergent don't get the stain out the first time, the hot water can set it, and check them before you put them in the dryer as the dryer heat can also set stains that are not completely removed.

I have SS pots and pans and all I have to do is soak them in hot soapy water and they clean out really easily. If there is anything that need more than a washcloth I use scotch scrubbies that are gentle.

Are the spots from drool? Lol, Kayla drools so much. But in our case it usually just washes out and I have never had to pretreat them. Hope you find something that works.

If you use laundry softener sheets, they can leave a greasy looking spot on things. Rub with a bar of soap and rewash. Some dryers heat up too much and it "melts" the softener into these spots.

Ginny, I use Shout Gel and love it. I don't need to use Oxi-clean or any of the others that I hear others talk about. I've even used it on upholstery(sp?) and a carpet stain.

For the SS pans. IF I rinse them out right away most things come right out. But in the case of a burn in the bottom or I can't get to them right away. I put in HOT tap water and a fabric softner sheet and I leave the pan sit until the water cools off. I dump out the water and use the sheet to wipe out the bottom of the pan. This usually does the trick. If there is still a bit left or it is a bad burn I will leave them soak over night. Once I have what ever was stuck out then I wash the pan. This trick works on anything that is baked on too. I make these Cheese Potatoes, talk about YUM but oh what a huge mess. If I fill the baking pan with water and float a fabric softner sheet in it, by morning everything just wipes right out... And I use to scrub and scrub..
