You know it has rainbow colors on inside. Black on the outside and you scratch.

By Feona on Friday, December 10, 2004 - 02:04 pm:

I used to do this with my students when I was a teacher. :) You can buy scratch paper but I think it's more fun to make your own. Usually a 2 day project, because the paint needs to dry thoroughly before scratching.

text description

Scratch Art Paper

SCRATCH BOARDS
You'll need:
Oak tag (or thick card stock paper)
crayons
black tempura paint
paint brush
scratching tool

1. Color entire sheet of oak tag haphazardly with different colors. Leave no blank spots. Be sure to apply pressure while coloring to make colors bright.

2. Paint entire sheet with black tempura paint. You might need 2 coats. Allow to dry thoroughly.

3. Now your scratch board is ready! Use a scratching tool or something that has a pointy tip but isn't sharp, such as a nail file or children's scissor tips.

Thanks Trina and Feona (for bringing this up )
I am going to try this with my kids at home.It will be a fun winter craft when they are on break.

As a kid, we just used crayons. You color your paper first w/ colors and then cover the whole thing with black crayon. Scratch the black off with a toothpick (but as kids we just our finger nails).

We did that very same thing Dana :)

Got to try the crayon only.

I tried oil pastels. Then used crayola black paint. It didn't scratch.
What did I do wrong?

By Trina~moderator on Saturday, December 11, 2004 - 08:35 am:

?? Good question, Feona. I used to use regular Crayola crayons and school supply tempura paint and it worked.

By Jelygu on Saturday, December 11, 2004 - 10:22 pm:

I did the crayon thing too. I had completely forgotten about it though! It took so much work but I loved it!

Must have been the oil pastels. Thanks trina for mentioning you could do it your self.

My son is such a busy beaver. I don't know how to play at a five year old's level and he rarely plays by himself, but I don't mind doing some art. He could do art for hours.
