Kitchen mats - Southern thing?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2004: Kitchen mats - Southern thing?
By Amy~moderator on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 01:57 pm:

Those of you in the north - do you have mats/rugs in your kitchen - for example, by the sink or stove? A friend of ours from Michigan says that he thinks mats in the kitchen is a southern thing. I think it is common everywhere. Who is right, here????? Do YOU have mats in your kitchen????

By Brandy on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 01:59 pm:

I don't i'm in Indiana but that's just me probably my mommy does lol = )

By Colette on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 01:59 pm:

I used to, but when it wore out I didnt replace it. I know lots of people up in New England that have them so it's not a southern thing.

By Conni on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 02:00 pm:

Yes, I have rugs in my kitchen. Guess I am Southern??

By Palmbchprincess on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 02:10 pm:

I'm a Yankee, but I've always had a kitchen rug, and so have my parents, and everyone else I can think of. I thought they are supposed to help keep you from slipping if the water splashes out of the sink!

By Andi on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 02:11 pm:

We do here in CA...:)

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 02:38 pm:

No rugs in my kitchen, although, we do have an mat by the door, so we can step there with wet shoes to get them off.

By Melanie on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 02:43 pm:

My mom always had one by her sink. We lived in NH. I don't have one now, though.

By Eve on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 02:46 pm:

Here in CT, I have a hooked rug in front of my sink.:)

By Breann on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 03:11 pm:

I am in the far east. We don't have a rug in our kitchen. I can think of just one person I know that does.

I think it's more of a personal thing rather than a regional thing.

It is fun to see what people do in their own homes though.

I am in Ohio and I have a rug at the sink and stove.

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 03:26 pm:

I"M in Ohio and i have a rug at my sink and one by the sliding door..which is in the kitchen.

By Happynerdmom on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 03:33 pm:

I have one by the sink.

By Bea on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 03:53 pm:

I'm in VA now, but I've lived all over, and always have a sink mat. It's easier on my back and feet.

By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 03:57 pm:

Nope, from Colorado.

By Cat on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 04:05 pm:

I used to have one, until it started to fall apart. It got banished to the laundry room and we just threw it out a few weeks ago. I'm not getting another because the dog won't leave the throw rugs in the entry way alone. No sense in getting one for the kitchen so he has another "toy" to play with while we're out. :) I'm in Colorado, but origanally from Michigan. Been all over the country, though, so I don't know if it's a Southern thing or not.

By Marcia on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 04:33 pm:

Well, I'm probably one of the farthest north, being in Ontario, and they're very popular. I don't have any right now, but have before. I usually have one at the sliding glass door in the kitchen, because I wheel Chrissy in that way.

By Missmudd on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 04:46 pm:

yep in oregon

By Angellew on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 04:54 pm:

I've always had one in front of my sink! So, did my mom, and her mother!!! And we're in Boston!!!! :)

By Rayanne on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 05:00 pm:

I want one, but cannot find one that I really like. I found one, but it has a sponge bottom and DH says that it will leave a yellow mark on the linolium.

By Feona on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 06:27 pm:

We have them at the kitchen door. In front of the washing machine. In front of the kitchen sink. Catches spills and keeps things cleaner I think... Also warm for bear feet. Gosh how do you spell bear feet? Shot mind is going... ny

By Amy~moderator on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 06:49 pm:

Thanks everyone, I THOUGHT so! LOL

Feona - it is bare feet. Probably just mommy brain, don't worry about it... :)

By Trina~moderator on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 06:52 pm:

I'm in CT and have a mat in front of my kitchen sink and another by the frig and stove. Helps to keep feet warm and is easier on the legs and back for standing/working. NOT a southern thing! LOL!

By Boxzgrl on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 07:14 pm:

We do here, kinda keeps the kitchen theme going. :)

By Laurazee on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 07:17 pm:

Yes here in Vancouver: in front of sink, in front of stove, in front of cat litter box, in front of washing machine....keeps feet warm, catches stuff, easy to throw in washing machine.

By Janet on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 09:35 pm:

Yes in Kansas, and yes in Illinois! :)

By Cocoabutter on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 09:44 pm:

Michigan here! I had one (it got nasty and I never replaced it) but I had problems with plantar fasciitis http://my.webmd.com/hw/health_guide_atoz/hw114460.asp. My feet were in a lot of pain. For most people, you can't do dishes sitting down, so it was difficult to do anything in the kitchen. My Dr. suggested getting an orthopedic mat. I found a great deal at Meijer on one, it lasted a little over ayear, but they don't carry them anymore. I really don't have that problem anymore, but I miss my mat.

By Brandy on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 09:48 pm:

I just got two the other day for the back and front door to wipe my feet on so maybe i should get one for my stove frig and sink = ) they are really pretty the ones i got though = )

By Bobbie~moderatr on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 11:07 pm:

I am also in Ohio and I have one at the sink, stove, fridge, washer, drier, front and back door. The one at the fridge started because of the spills. The ones at the stove, sink, washer and drier are mainly for my back. BUT I don't wear shoes or slippers. I am a bare feet, until it gets cold and then out comes the socks, type of girl..

Everyone I know has rugs at least at the sink.. So around here it surly isn't a Southern thing..

By Imamommyx4 on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 11:26 pm:

Tennessee--one at the sink and one at the back door
