My poor doggy
She's 5 years old and I think she has arthritis. I already know the treatment once/if it is diagnosed and it will cost a pretty penny but shes worth it. Its just so sad to see her limping. My vet I used to work for is specialized in orthopedics so were going to him since he's always done an outstanding job. Atleast on the bright side I still get free vet visits and a 30% discount. I can't get her in until next Monday because thats when the Dr. works next and though he'd go out of his way for me, he just had a baby so i'll give him his personal time. I guess my steps for now are to buy some Cosequin and Creacarb which help build muscle mass, rebuild cartilage and reduce joint pain and wait for her Dr. visit. I know the first visit will consist of of a few xrays and such. Oh, well.... who needs extra money anyways??? (sarcasm) Please keep her in your thoughts, I feel so bad for her! It seems like just yesterday I took home the cutest Siberian Husky ever!
AAwwww...so sorry to hear. It's so hard to see our furry friends go through pain...ugh. It's one of the worst feelings ever. Is it Lexi or Nikki?
Nikki, my baby i've had since 8 weeks old.
Time flies so fast when you have a dog. When Honey got sick, earlier this year, and then had to be put to sleep, it seemed like 4 years had gone by in a heartbeat!
Scott's Sasha has bad hips - on a scale of 1 to 5 one hip is a 3 and the other a 4 for problems. He started her on Glucosamine and Chondroitin (which my own orthopedic doctor recommends for my knees) and it has helped tremendously. When we first got her she went up the stairs very gingerly and with a lot of discomfort and now she bounds up them.
Ginny, the Cosequin is a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement in a chewable beef tablet for dogs. It's quite pricey but most dogs love the taste. After I go to the Dr. i'm going to research her dosage, strength etc... and see if I can find a generic brand because that stuff runs $75.00 for a 120 count bottle! I think I worked for him too long so everytime I think of the treatments I can pretty much assume he'll suggest, I see the dollar signs flying around too! How long has Sasha been on the supplement? Was she on it before Scott adopted her?
She was not on it before Scott adopted her. She has been on it 2-3 months. We saw a definite improvement after about 3 weeks. You are right, I remember now it is called Cosequin. He got it from 1-800-Pet-Meds, as being the least expensive place he could get it and I think it took about 2 weeks to arrive. It is a 120 tablet bottle, and there are about 20 left. He gave her 1 tablet morning and night the first two weeks, and now just 1 in the morning (she weighs 100-120 pounds). She is such a glutton, she would eat it straight from his hand - he can give her the heartworm pill from his hand and she just gulps it down. The dosage per pill is 500 mg Glucosamine HCL, 400 mg Condroitin Sulfate 95% Pure, 100 mg MSM (methylsulfonymethane - whatever that is), and some little bits of other stuff. Here's the web site for the particular product he uses, which is called Joint Enhancer: http://www.1800petmeds.com/pgroup.asp?LV=60&PG=Super%20Joint%20Enhancer It is $36 for 120 and $60 for 250 I did a google on petmeds to find this site, which is certainly the one Scott uses. I noticed there is also a Canada pet meds site but didn't check it. I do think the petmeds site is worth checking out. Scott has used it before and says the clinical vet at the hospital where he works says it is a reliable supplier.
PetMeds is great! When I worked at the vet my boss would refuse to fill prescriptions from there because he was losing money. And legally he didn't have to unless somebody could prove that there was a physical address in Ca. Boy, did I enjoy those phone calls, lol! Does Sasha get Adequan injections? Did Scott need an rx to oder Cosequin through PetMeds?
I just looked on PetMeds and they have their generic version of Cosequin in a 250 count chewables. They are only $59.99 as opposed top Cosequins 250 count for $133.99. Maybe i'll use that! Some dosages and everything. Its called Joint Enhancer.
Melissa, Scott says he didn't need a prescription for the Cosequin. No, she didn't get any shots that I know of. The Joint Enhancer is exactly what I was writing about. Check the link I put in my post above.
I chatted with Scott a bit about this, and he says that the first couple of weeks he had Sascha she would put her front feet up on the bed and whimper, until he picked up her hind end to move her onto the bed (did I mention she's a couch/bed potato?). Now, she jumps onto the bed from a standing start. Can you imagine 110 pounds of Rottweiler jumping up onto the bed with you???!!! Fortunately, she understands very clearly that she is not allowed on my bed - the cat shares my bed, and understands very clearly which side is his and which side is mine.
Oh, and one of my coworkers just brought her dog home from the vet after a 6 day $1000 bout with pancreatitis!
Ouch, Ginny. That's a lot of money! Hopefully that never happens to Jasmine! Although, the $550 we just spent on some car maintenance today, is just half that.
I'll bet you'll have Jasmine with you a lot longer than the car, and get more pleasure from her.
Probably, but I like my car, too, and I like it that it stops better now, also!
