Dh did a bad bad thing
He just called me to se if I charged something on the credit card today and I told him, "Yes, Some Christmas gifts off the internet". He said, "Ok, good". I asked him why and he said that he had to cancel our account because he got an e-mail from e-bay saying that he had to update his account and credit card info. So...he did and now his social security number is on there too. I don't know how many times I have told him not to answer those. Is there something else that we need to do since they have his social now? WHY DON'T THEY LISTEN?!?!?!
Ug. I hope that doesn't come back to bite him in the butt.
Wow, even my kids know to ignore stuff like that!
I just found out that they have all of his information, including his mom's maiden name!!!!! He red flagged our credit report through eqwafax(sp). Is there anything else that needs to be done? Please help.
Make sure he red flags with *all* of the credit bureus, Equifax in just one of them. Pretty much go through the same procedure as you would if a credit card was stolen. Maybe contact EBay and ask them every step you need to take.
I agree he needs to notify Transunion and Experian, too, and also call all of your credit cards and bank accounts, and ask them what extra security measures can be put in place. I had my credit reports flagged, and the next time I had a credit check run they had to speak with me personally, and verify extra personal information, like my exact car note amount.
I hope it is Ok to cut/paste. This is straight from ebays security info: What You Should Do if You've Become an Identity Theft Victim Restoring a person's accounts and credit report once he or she becomes a victim of identity theft can be an extremely frustrating and time-consuming experience. An identity theft victim should contact a number of organizations that have an impact on credit ratings and security. The Federal Trade Commission offers an Affidavit of Identity Theft that can be notarized and then sent to creditors and agencies. Credit bureaus Early contact should be made with the three credit reporting bureaus Equifax Experian TransUnion www.equifax.com Report Fraud: 1-800-525-6285 Order a credit report 1-800-685-1111 P.O. Box 740241 Atlanta, GA 30374-0241 www.experian.com Report Fraud: 1-888-397-3742 Order a credit report 1-88-397-3742 P.O. Box 1017 Allen, TX 75013-0949 www.tuc.com Report Fraud: 1-800-680-7289 Order a Credit Report 1-800-916-8800 Fraud Victim Assistance Department P.O. Box 6790 Fullerton, CA 92834 Bank and other accounts Individuals who believe that one of their accounts have been stolen should check-in with their other accounts to see the extent of the damage. Consumer Credit Counseling Service If fraudulent charges are discovered, the victim should call their local Consumer Credit Counseling Service at 800-388-2227 (or locate a regional bureau at www.nfcc.org) for assistance in clearing false claims from his or her credit report. Check guarantee companies In cases where bank accounts have been opened fraudulently in a person's name, that individual should call a check guarantee company like Telecheck at 800-366-2425 or online at www.telecheck.com. These companies can flag the file so that the counterfeit checks will be refused. This just happened to us too! (Ours was from msn). It's called Phishing. Did you cancel the credit card? Did you contact ebay?
Yes and yes
You've gotten good advice above, and yvonne's is very thorough. Here is a good site about identity theft, which probably repeats most of what Yvonne said but may have something new: http://101-identitytheft.com/checklist.htm If you haven't already, contact your bank and anywhere you have an account - mortgage company, car loan, etc. Your bank will probably want you to close your present accounts and open new accounts. I agree - they just don't listen, bless their pointy little heads.
Oh that's scary. There is nothing that can be done about the SS#. You can get your bank account number changed, along with your credit card number, but your SS# never changes. My purse was stolen about 5 years ago, (With my SS card in it, of course) so far I haven't had any problems with identity theft. But, it does bother me that my SS# is floating around out there somewhere.
Well, I canceled all credit cards and they are sending us new ones with different account numbers. I called my bank and they said to keep a close eye on all transactions and if anything looks suspicious to call and they will take care of it. Chances are, they just wanted to use my husbands name to get a credit card and they will not be able to because our credit has been red flagged. Hopefully, everything will be ok. I think he has learned his lesson. Poor guy was so upset all weekend. I told him that it was a simple mistake and that everything would be ok. Now, lets just hope that everything will be ok.
