Ebay vent

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2004: Ebay vent
By Paulas on Sunday, November 28, 2004 - 08:50 pm:

I was the high bidder on a boys fleece vest today. I was so excited because it went for 99 cents. However, the seller emailed me and with their handling fee and postal costs the total is $10.99 US which works out to about $14-$15 CAD. I don't want negative feedback but I also don't really want to pay $10US shipping for a 99cent item!! ARGGH!

Thanks for letting me vent!

I know what you mean. I won items with the shipping and handeling fees high too. I usually try not to buy those items, if the fee is not there, I e-mail the person first before I bid.

By Christylee on Sunday, November 28, 2004 - 10:39 pm:

That is just insane it can't possibly cost that much to ship and if it's a child's vest it could probably be just put in a mailing envelope. I'd pay for it though because I'm like you I covet my 100% rating but they are really not doing good business and I wouldn't do any with them again for sure.

I rarely bid on an item unless I know up front how much the shipping is going to be.

I've never used eBay, but can't you give them negative feedback for this high shipping cost? And, can you "appeal" to eBay?

By Trina~moderator on Monday, November 29, 2004 - 06:39 am:

Bummer. I always check shipping costs before bidding. If not listed, as Rayanne stated, you can e-mail the seller and ask before making a bid. Is there a Canadian ebay? That would avoid the US/Canada $ conversions and shipping costs.

You definately should double check shipping costs. I have a friend who does a full time business through ebay and his shipping costs are not just postage. It's postage, the shipping container, the wage he pays the person who ships stuff out for him, etc.

I would pay the .99 cents and let her keep the item. I did that one time when something was going to cost way to much to ship. It saved my rating. I have a problem with ebay right now also. I bid on something that I thought it included everything and when I got it, it was only half of the item. I read it again and her description was very misleading. What makes it worse I am the second person this week with the same item same problem. I emailed her and asked for a refund. I am waiting to hear. Does anyone know if there is someone I could report her two if she doesn't want to comply?

On the other hand, we put down $5 shipping for some twin bed sheets that we sold last week and they ended up costing $9 to ship, so we lost money on that one! LOL! On the other hand, these were Green Bay Packer sheets and we got $18.26 for them, so I'm pleased about that.

Oooh, Beth has a good idea! Offer to pay the 99 cents, as well as the fee she had to pay to list the item. Far cheaper than the alternative!

We have one negative feedback from a seller because we left him negative feedback after not hearing anything from him for TWO WEEKS after winning an auction and paying within 15 minutes. We emailed him several times and didn't hear a thing. Finally after we left the negative feedback he emailed us, got really nasty and sent us our item, and then had the nerve to leave us negative feedback for not being patient. Hello??? Two weeks and no communication? Get a clue, buddy. Sorry about your eBay fiasco. I agree with some of the others to check with the seller about the shipping, and if that's accurate offering to pay the 99cents and the listing fee. Good luck.

I agree paying the 99 cents, and telling them to keep the item is a good idea. As far as selling, I always give a flat rate S&H in my listing, and ship within 48 hours of payment. Like Dawn, I've lost money a few times, but you usually get higher bids when you provide S&H costs, so it balances out. I hate bad sellers, they make everything harder for the honest people! Sorry you had such a tough time with this seller!
