Mattress Shopping, Any advice?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2004: Mattress Shopping, Any advice?
By Eve on Monday, November 15, 2004 - 09:59 am:

We are in the market for a new mattress. We went yeterday and spent 2 hours in the store trying out the bedding. We think we found something we agree on (I think it was a Sterns and Foster Beauty Rest), but now my DH is interested in the Kingsdown bedding, but I think it's too expensive.

Any advice about this purchase?

By Kaye on Monday, November 15, 2004 - 10:07 am:

My only advice is don't save money on your mattress. With a good mattress you will have it for at least 10 years and it makes all the difference in the world on how you rest and how you feel.

Oh gosh Eve, I'm sorry! You asked me about this earlier and I've been busy and forgot. We've been happy with our purchases and service at Better Bedding. We currently have a Simmons Beauty Rest mattress and love it.

We currently have a Kingsdown, it has been great. We are also shopping for a new mattress. Ours is 12 years old. We did not buy the highest end Kingsdown but it has held up well. I have heard great things about the Stearns & Foster too. I guess I'm not that much help! We will be shopping next week , maybe you can give me some tips! :-)

We're going to replace ours with the Tempurpedic mattress. I've been wanting one, and DH finally tried it out yesterday in the mall and he's convinced. They are expensive, so we'll have to save up for one, but they're incredibly comfortable and give great support, and since I've had 2 back surgeries and DH has a congenital problem with his back, having a good mattress is high on our list of priorities.

Karen, Although I haven't looked into the mattresses, I have had two Tempurpedic pillows in the past. I loved them, but each one lost it's umph after a couple years. I've always wondered if the mattresses did the same. ?? Worth looking into, especially considering the cost. Let me know what you find out.

DH is set on a Select Comfort sleep number bed. We have the $ saved for the mattress but we want a whole new bedroom set to go with it so when we get out of base housing and get a bedroom that is big enough for all that, off to the mall we go.

Good luck finding a mattress, I agree its always good to spend a bit of $ for great quality!

Dh wants to get the Select Comfort too. He has even went as far as going to the store and he knows what his number is. LOL We just got a new mattress a few years ago though and it is really nice and still in great shape, so he is going to have to wait for a while!!

Simmons Beauty Rest! Thank you, Trina. LOL! We looked at so many, that they started to blend together.

We won't skimp, but I also don't want to spend $5,000. (The Stearns & Foster I liked was pricey!)

Karen, the Beauty Rest we looked at and liked had a layer of that foam in the pillow top.

I'll let you know what we decide. Thank you!:)

Oh, Sarah. I totally forgot to mention, The Kingsdown is impressive for it's dust/dust mite/allergy free materials! I have dust allergies and I think that's wonderful.:)

We have a Select Comfort in our house - I bought it for Jen after her back injury in a car accident. It's pretty comfortable, but IMO, doesn't even compare to the Tempurpedic.

Trina, I'd never heard that about Tempurpedic, I'll definitely look into that before we spend that amount of money on a mattress.

I have two Kingsdown mattresses. They are great! I don't remember them being expensive, though. We got them at Sleepy's 5 and 7 years ago.
Ame

The
One KD is in my guestroom. Everyone who sleeps there wants to know what kind of mattress it is because it's so comfortable.

How about checking Consumer Reports? Most libraries have several years issues and the year end summaries. But so much is just how it feels to you.

I agree with Kaye - don't skimp on your mattress. You can expect a good mattress to last 10 years or more, so whatever you pay for it, divide by 10 to get what it will cost you each year to sleep comfortably. Since not sleeping comfortably will ruin your day, it is well worth the investment.

I read somewhere, many years ago, that there are three things you can't cheat on - your back (mattress), your feet (shoes) and your eyes ... to which I would add your teeth (from bitter experience).

We have Sterns and Foster and it is very good.
Well worth the bucks. We bought it over 10 years ago and it is still good. I think sterns and forster is know to be premium mattress.

There is also try some mattress for 90 days to see if you like it. What is it? temperpedic mattress.
