Dichroic glass jewelry

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2004: Dichroic glass jewelry

Has anyone else ever worn this? About 18 years ago my mom gave me some dichroic glass beads that I still have; they are incredibly beautiful.

There's a local Plantation festival each year the 2nd weekend in November near my house. I go every year with my *other* best friend, it's sort of a tradition with us, the entire day is just for US. We spend the day pretty much indulging outselves, browsing the crafts and jewelry and pretty much spoiling ourselves.

Anyway, there's a woman who is there each year who makes this type of jewelry. I've bought a few pieces in the past, and today I bought more. Jen had asked me to get her some, and she really had some beautiful ones on display today. You can wear it on chains, ribbons, silk cords or rubber or leather cords. It's getting to be fairly popular in some areas.

The other tradition we have is we buy a Christmas ornament together each year. We choose one ornament that we both really like and we each get it. We've been doing that for about 6 years now and it's something we really look forward to. We usually do it the same day of the festival, and we managed to get that done today too.

So...... does anyone else like dichroic glass jewelry?

It sounds interesting, can you post a picture of it??

Dichroic glass is beautiful! We use it a lot in the studio, but only for accents since is so very expensive, we're talking well over $100 (and up depending on the color) for a 12"x12" piece of glass! I have never seen jewelry made from dichroic, but I bet it is really something special. I'd love to see a picture of what you have.

I didn't realize that this is what it is called but my aunt has a few pieces of this. My sister and I have an ongoing *discussion* about who gets which pieces when she passes on. They are beautiful. I just spent a half hour looking at different sites showcasing it. Did you know that people even sculpt with it? There were pieces selling for thousands of dollars that were absolutely incredible! I'd also love to see pictures of the pieces you have.

I would love to see a picture because I don't know what it is.

I'll have to take pics of what I have, they are all pretty much the same shape, but they're gorgeous. In the meantime, check this out, this is basically what it looks like. You tend to see a lot of pieces with blues/purples/greens, and the ones with yellows/oranges/reds are so *fiery* looking. I got a piece yesterday that looks like a huge opal.

Does it really match anything you wear? Because it reflects the color and light cause it is glass?
Do you have to wear a cord with it?

By Karen~moderator on Monday, November 15, 2004 - 07:38 am:

It matches what you wear. You can wear a rubber, leather or silk cord, or a chain - I have several of each, different types.
