My poor baby

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2004: My poor baby
By Kolbysmom on Friday, November 5, 2004 - 10:05 am:

Wednesday, Kolby and the little girl I babysit(5 yr old) were in his room laying on the floor reading books. I checked on them, then went to the bathroom. I came out to Kolby SCREAMING! He was holding his wrist. He finally said Katie hit his arm. Well, DH and I asked the little girl if she hit his arm, she said no. Over night and the next day the pain got worse. I took him to a Prompt Med. They did X Rays, said it just might be a sprain, to take Motrin. The Dr. there said if the pain didn't get better in the next week or two, to take him to his Ped. Well, the pain is not any better yet. We've made his a make-shift sling and it seems to help a little. It's just putting his clothes on or getting him in or out of his carseat, he SCREAMS. He has a very high tolerance for pain. I'm just really worried that there might be something wrong. I talked to the little girl again yesterday. She said he had his face in a pillow and she didn't think he was breathing, so she grabbed his arm to pull him up and he jerked back and his arm twisted.

It just kills me to see him in so much pain. I feel like the worse mom ever because I don't know exactly what happened. I've been crying all night and morning because I just don't know what to do.

Any ideas?

Hmmm...I would have guess dislocated. What type of facility is prompt med? I might would take him in for a second opinion. How much pain, is he not using his arm at all? is there any bruising or swelling? He is overall unhappy? My dd dislocated my sons elbown, she was 3 and he was 2, they were off playing, I had no idea, he cried and cried, and we waiting till the next day. He spent the whole night not moving from the couch, it hurt his arm to walk. It happens all the time, you can't be there every moment :(

There's no swelling, he has a tiny bruise on his thumb. He won't move to do anything. He's sitting on the couch watching cartoons right now.

I would get a 2nd. opinion. If he's in that much pain, I would try to find someone to help him so he's not in it.

{{{HUGS}}} Sometimes sprains are so much more painful than breaks... I twisted my foot a few weeks ago, convinced it had been broken, but wasn't. It was horribly painful. The dr had me use ice initially, but then he recommended heat (heat pad and sports cream). And you aren't a bad mom! You took him to PromptCare, didn't you? It'll just take time to feel better.

Poor kiddo! Personally, I'd take him to your ped. to get another opinion just to be safe. Seems it shouldn't be hurting so much.

By Vicki on Friday, November 5, 2004 - 12:26 pm:

I agree with the others that say take him for a second opinion. Kids bounce back so fast that if he is still not using it, I am guessing something more could wrong!

By Missmudd on Friday, November 5, 2004 - 12:38 pm:

Yep take him to your ped, at the very least they can give him some prescription pain meds until it heals up enough for him to be comfortable.

Did they check his elbow? Randy was standing on the couch once and fell over a friend of ours that was sitting there and we thought he'd hurt his wrist. He was crying and complaining and holding it and not using it. It turned out they think he'd dislocated his elbow (what they call "Nurse maid's elbow"). By the time the orthepedic (sp) surgeon saw him a few days later he said it had probably gone back into place by itself because he couldn't find anything wrong with it or on the x-rays. It was still sore, though. I think a second opinion may be a good idea. And I know some people are against this, but a chiropractor may be able to help if it is some sort of dislocation. Jmho, but I thought I'd throw that option out there. I hope Kolby's doing better soon. Hugs to you both!

Thanks for all the input! He FINALLY fell asleep on the couch. I think we're going to take him to his Ped. in the morning if he's still in pain. I'm just really glad the weekend is here. DH will be home and I will have more help. It's hard taking care of DS when I have awful morning sickness.

The poor thing.
I hope he feels better soon!

Nikki, I hope he is feeling better really soon.
Keep us posted.

Hope it feels better soon. Poor little guy!

Ditto the 2nd opinion.

My DH fell off a ladder a few days before Halloween at work. He thought he'd broken his thumb. Turns out he has a severely sprained wrist/thumb, since he used that hand to break his fall. It's been over a week and he's still experiencing a lot of pain and swelling. He went to the ER and Xrays confirmed no breaks or fractures.

Sprains are often more painful than breaks, and can take longer to feel better. I hope HE feels better soon!

How are things today?

By Kolbysmom on Monday, November 8, 2004 - 12:16 pm:

He has been fine since yesterday! Strange, really. He went to bed Sat. night and woke up fine on Sunday. I'm just happy he's not in pain anymore and I can get more done around the house. Thanks for asking!

Good to hear! :)
