Taxes/Teenager working ???

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: Taxes/Teenager working ???

My DS (16) has had Federal Income taxes withheld from his checks this year. He has paid in about $600. He is a dependent on our tax return, and we end up getting everything back that we paid in, plus the child tax credit, etc. How does he get his money back, and what type of return would he file if he is a dependent on our return? TIA for any help with this :)

He files the 1040 ez form. And on there it says things like check here if you are a dependent on someone elses taxes or if someone can claim you. Etc. It walks you through it in the book. I can't think off the top of my head right now how it works. But he does have to file I do know that for sure because I remember having to file my first time. And my dad claimed me too.

I also filed a few times while still a dependant. My mom just had her accountant do it for me, but Bobbie is right... there is a box for that. And it's so easy.... he shouldn't have any problems. If you don't want to do them you can have them prepared for a nominal fee.

We just encountered this last year. DSD(17) filed the 1040EZ form (I did her taxes, as well as ours) and DH and I filed the 1040A like we always do. Checked the box on the 1040EZ that she was claimed as a dependent on ours. She got all of her money back and we got everything we usually do. Piece of cake!! :)
