Basset hounds
Since having to put our dog down a couple of weeks ago, we are starting to consider a new dog. We have been doing lots of research on the internet and have checked out books from the library. So far we are really falling in love with basset hounds with a beagle being our second choice. We have a basset hound rescue near here and I have emailed them, but not heard back yet. That way we can get a pure breed, but be saving a life as well--not a fan of buying from breeders when there are so many unloved pups out there. Anyway, everything we've read has been so favorable. The cons we've heard are shedding, drooling, and stubbornness. Shedding is no prob b/c we have 2 cats, inc. 1 longhair so we are used to that already. Drooling I've heard is luck of the draw and as we are about to get rid of carpet I think that's doable. And...I've heard/read that their stubborn streak is more comical than frustrating (i.e., pretends to be asleep when you ask them to do a trick, but come running the minute you open the frig.) We want the companionship of a dog, we hate little yappy lap dogs, we don't want a dominant/aggressive breed, and we don't want a dog with high exercise needs. We do have a fenced yard (and have learned that this is impt since bassets like to track scents and get lost very easily), but this dog would primarily be an inside dog. Any basset experiences good, bad, or otherwise? P.S. Here's the dog we're thinking about. The boys want to change his name to Botox though--LOL
Basset Hound info They look like a great dog. I have heard they're boring, though. lol When we were looking I really liked them, but dh didn't. I still think they're adorable. If the dog you're looking at (who is a cutie, btw) is in foster care, you can talk to the foster "parents" to see what he's like. Good luck, Pam!
AWWW.He is so cute!Good luck.My friend is looking into a Basset Hound also.
He's adorable!
Pam, you know I'm not a pet person (and the drooling would be enough for me to consider another breed, sorry!!) but I had to say I LOVE the name the boys picked!!!! How adorable!!!
I LOVE him!!!! The coloring is beautiful, the name is adorable, and so far, the breed sounds like a good fit for your family. DH and I love them and are debating between them and a corgi. If we get a BH, we already plan to name him "Flash".
They are so adorable, and I love those big ole ears.
OMG that looks just like our Basset Floppy, she is lemon and white just like the one you are looking at. We have had Floppy for about 1 year now and we LOVE her.. She does shed, but we haven't had any problems with drooling and as far as being stubborn, she can be at times, but she is so sweet that we just look over it.. She is GREAT with ds (4) and he loves her. However, we didn't know how big they could grow to be and she is getting pretty big, she has been a good inside dog but she likes her time outside as well.. I would recommend getting a Basset, they are very loving and cute!! But don't let those big eyes and floppy ears fool ya!! They like to run and play just like any other kind of dog.. I think you would be very satisfied..
Nanaoie has a basset, She looks just like him. Her name is Tinkerbell... She is a great dog , They can be a little stubborn at times..
What a cute little guy I love that face!
I have a almost 3 yr old basset, she is a doll.Don't believe anyone when they tell you they are lazy.NO WAY!.She can run circles around our beagle and jump up and kiss you on your face. She is very sweet around people and other dogs and loves our 3 cats.If you have any questions feel free to ask.Good luck!
