Kitchen Design Question...HELP!!
Like I posted earlier in the week, we are getting a new house and I have to pick out some stuff. Originally I thought we were going to have Granite Counters but I found out today that they are White or Bone Tile. Here is the question: Do any of you have an all white kitchen? If you do what the the pros and cons. I'm not so worried about dirt because white is so easy to clean. Ours would be White tile counters with a white tile back splash, White appliances, White cabinets and light colored tile on the floor. We thought about doing stainless steel appliances but I decided against that because we have them now and every time DS touches them there are fingerprints. I wish I could post a picture of the kitchen but I'm not sure how to do it since it's on a website. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
We used to have an all white kitchen. I used red towels, pot holders and accessories and I loved it. It looked so nice and clean and the clean up wasn't any worse than what I do now with wood cabinets, mauve counters (Blech!), and medium beige and white lino. If you wanted it to post the website addy, we could look at it that way. BTW, I'm still so jealous!
I agree with Cori, a red and white theme, with black accents would look great! Very streamlined. As far as appliances, I'm partial to stainless steel, but if you really don't like them maybe black? All white appliances might be too much.
I do have the option of black appliances but they show little fingerprints as well. Right now I have decorative cake size blue and white floral plates hanging on the wall in my kitchen. Maybe I could do something like that in the new house to give it a POP of color????
My appliances are all white. I'd probably do something with black and taupe, or a Caribbean colored theme - blues/greens, etc. Whatever you do, you need to add color in decorations, towels, etc. What are your tastes - country, modern, etc.????
Hmmm..I love the look of all white, I am doing that right now in my bedroom. If you like 'less is more', pretty clear bottles add a touch, or a piece of stained glass in a window add color. I think the all white w/stainless steel would seem too cold for a kitch. All white would look clean and make the room appear larger. You can always add plants, or lil nick nacks to add a lil personality. You are so lucky!! Enjoy it!
my inlaws ahd an all white kitchen (except for the stainless fridge) all white looks fine, stainless does NOT go well. They redid it because it was so stark. From what I have seen in kitchens I prefer either matching, white and white or a contrast, dark counter tops, with white cabinets, or dark wood and white counter tops.
I had an all white kitchen, and I had Navy Blue accessories all around. It was pretty. Now I have wood cabinets so I go with more of a neutral color. Good Luck, and I can't wait to see pictures of it I bet it will be beautiful.
Andi, They have stainless steel appliances that show no fingerprints now! These are definitly on my wish~list. I have white tile on the counters, and a few fruit tiles on the back splash along with the white. I have seen the sticky adhesive designs that you can add to any tile back splash and they really are cute and not permanent like mine. Can't wait to see pictures, though.
I should have posted above, though my appliances are all white, my cabinets/countertops aren't, though I wish they were, because they are old and UGLY. Anyway, my canisters are cobalt blue glass - and I have about a dozen of them - those slim ones you can get from Miles Kimball. LOL And I have different blue glass things in the kitchen. My walls are papered, white background with some seashells, and the floor is a very light porcelain tile, so basically the kitchen is light, and my color pretty much comes from the shell artwork and the blue glass in there.
I have white cabinets and white appliances in my kitchen. We have light colored wood on the floor. The previous owner painted the walls red and it looks wonderful!!!!! I added white/taupe/red curtains and I have black accessories. It looks great. You can always paint the walls or add accessories to give it some color. Also, I have seen decal like things(I don't know what they are called) that you can adhere to your tile to add color or a pattern. That is something you can do on the backsplash.
II was going to suggest painting your wall a vibrant color too. I think all white could be rather stark and I personally LOVE color! Wallies are the things you can adhere to your backsplash to add more color too. A bright blue, granny smith apple green, sunny yellow, terra cotta would all be great colors for your wall and then you could accent with towels, curtains, and accessories. Have fun and be sure to post pics!
I love the idea of adding the color taupe into the mix somewhere. Lately I've been into colors like that. I like the look of all white. It looks very clean and fresh.
I just did my kitchen Taupe with white and black it looks great! I am a big black fan though.
I love a green and white kitchen. I think it's so fresh and clean looking. I'd paper the walls with a green and white ticking pattern
and do my window treatments in a co-ordinating print. Then I'd have plants everywhere (real or silk) in white painted baskets.
I have a black and white kitchen with one colorful wall with lots of different colors glazed. My countertops are black and white (checkerboard) tiles with white grout. ALL my appliances are black. The white tile and grouts cleans up easily. The black appliances do not show fingerprints. My fridge is black but is kinda bumby (not smooth) in texture I think that is why is doesn't show prints. I think a white kitchen would be easy to decorate--with colorful accessories. You can always change out everything for seasons or by your mood without having to completely change the big stuff. I mean using white as a backdrop you have a huge range of decorating possibilities. Yvonne
Thank you ladies. I am going to talk with the Options Lady and my DH today at 12 on the phone. I didnt want to drive an hour each way to go to the meeting in San Diego because of the rain. I think with your help I have decided to go all white and I will play it up with paint and window treatments. Our house went on the market today and I feel so sick about it. I love this house and I am sooooo nervous about buying a new home.
((((Andi)))) Everything will work out fine! A year from now, you will be sitting in your brand new, beautiful home thinking that everything is wonderful. I think the all white kitchen will be very nice! You can easily switch out the towels and decor for different colors anytime you get tired of it! Good luck with selling your house....I'm sure it will go quickly!
I think an all white kitchen looks clean and bright, but don't make the mistake of getting white ceramic tiles (smooth ones). I used to have those in my kitchen and about 2 seconds it was dirty again. A textured ceramic tile would be a better choice and you can get them in white or light complimentary colors. Be sure to let us know how it goes and take pictures!
Katherine, I feel the exact opposite about the tiles. I think the smooth ones wipe off easily while the textured ones held onto the dirt much more. My kitchen was tiled with the smooth but my best friend's kitchen has the textured ones and she hates them. Maybe it is a personal preference: ease of cleaning vs. how long they stay clean.
