Any massage therapists out there?
I am thinking of getting my MT license. Just wondering if any of you have any suggestions on good schools or good questions I can ask them when trying to choose a mt school. Thanks!
My DD is in massage therapy school at Blue Cliff College. We are in Louisiana, but I belive there are Blue Cliff's in other states as well. I think the injuries she sustained and therapy she went through after 2 auto accidents played a huge part in her choosing this as a career. It's not just about massage either, she's learning about natural healing, hormones, so many things, I had no idea. She's been in school since July and has a 4.0 GPA right now, and it amazes me sometimes to hear her talk about what they are doing in classes. I've learned things from her! It's not cheap - her course is 18 months and I think it was $14,000. She bought her own table, which was extra, but something she needed. While in school, you have to practice the massage techniques on *volunteers* as homework. You can use the tables at the school and do it there, but once you're out you'll need your own table anyway, so she has hers already. It's pretty intense - her 18 month program is 4 days a week, 9-5, in class. That's considered full time. Obviously if you're working an outside job, you'd have to go at night/weekends, which would take longer. Questions.........I'll have to ask Jen - I have no clue what to look for in a school, but she would. Here are a couple of links that might point you in the right direction: http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/hcqs/plc/massage.htm http://schools.naturalhealers.com/lcms/ http://www.holisticjunction.com/categories/healing-arts.html
I'm currently in the middle of a "technical training program" for Surgical assistants and just want to give you a piece of advice. Before you decide on a school go to several (I'd say at least five or six, maybe even 10 if they have them in your area) check them out with the BBB and ask about acrediting, placement, and financail aide. AND the most important advice I have on it is don't sign up the day you go and see it, check it out, send a friend to check it out, and then make a decision. I'm having a HORRIBLE experience with my school right now and not sure what I can legally do about it. I'm not wanting to put a damper on what it is you're wanting to do, GO FOR IT! BUT make sure and do your homework on the school before signing up. I wish I had done more becasue maybe I wouldn't be in the mess I'm in right now. Good luck on making your decision, it's not easy but worth it if it's something you'll enjoy!
I would ask: How do new message therapists get clients? How much do your graduates make in their first year? What is the drop out rate at your school? How many of your graduates leave school with a job and how many leave intending on working for themselves? How many of your graduates are still making a living as a massage therapist after 3 years? 5 years? How many of your students are on financial aid? What is your default rate?
Thanks everyone! I am considering the University of Phoenix. Advice is still welcome though!
