Home remedy? burn relief......ouch

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: Home remedy? burn relief......ouch
By Mommyathome on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 - 08:42 pm:

I totally fried my thumb about 30 minutes ago. It is killing me. The only relief I can find is soaking it in cold water. We have aloe vera gel. But once the gel warms it burns again. Any other ideas?

What has always worked best for me is just what you have done--soaking it in cold water. I hold it in ice water for as long as I can. I have found that even some very bad burns improve rapidly if I continue the cold water treatment for as long as is necessary to make the burning stop. The last time I burnt my hand, I probably held it in cold water for a couple hours with only some very brief breaks in between. This method has even kept my burns from blistering when I was just sure there was going to be some bad blistering.

My dd grabbed a curling iron when she was 2 and the doc said that we should keep it in COLD water for at least 4 hours. He said for smaller burns 1-2 hours was best, if possible. Aloe from the plant is much better than the gel, if you can find a plant. We are always breaking off pieces of ours for friends and they always comment on how much more it helps compared to the gel. Want me to FedEx you a piece or two? :) I hope it feels better soon.

Well......I did a search and came up with all kinds of things. I tried 2 of them. The frst one was applying mustard. It didn't work. The second was toothpaste. I think it is working a little bit.
It hasn't blistered yet. DH came home and said it looks pretty bad. The skin isn't broken, but it is literally fried to a crisp.

Yeah LOL....send me some real aloe :) i'm still keeping cold water handy, and I dip it when it starts to burn again.

The reason it is still stinging is it is still burning...keep it under water to stop the frying! At least put ice in a washcloth to keep it cool, you just have to get your finger temp back to normal! And sorry :( being hurt when you are the mommy is no fun!

Thanks Kaye.....I'm holding it back in the water again. I've been carrying around a cup of ice water since it haapened.

I had to make hotdogs for dinner because I can't do much with one hand. Typing with one hand is also slow going LOL

I'm such a baby when it comes to stuff like this!

I think I would be crying like a baby if that happened to me! My bil came to our house and we were making french fries, and he put his finger right in the boiling grease, his finger was also fryed, he had a huge blister, which he popped , which was the worse thing he could have done, as he was open to infection. He would not listen to us, ended up going to emergency room, they had it all bandaged up. I think same as everyone else, keep it in the water. Hugs for you, hope the pain goes away soon, :(

No ideas here, but I do hope you feel better soon.:)

I don't know how I managed to post twice, especially in view of the fact that the two posts are so far apart in time. LOL! Oh well, that's a new one for me. I hope your thumb stops burning soon.

I have no real advice, but my dad was badly burned in a accident at work once when I was a kid, and they gave him a cream to take home and use in his dessing for his burn. It was called "Silvadine" cream. (Not sure about spelling) It worked so well we got a couple of extras and I would use it for sun burns and stuff.

I don't even know if you can still get it.

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 - 07:45 am:

Silvadine cream works WONDERS! Not just for burns but for things like road rash too. Oldest DS fell off the back of a moving car when he was a teen, and lost most of the skin on his back. Silvadine cream helped it heal and he has no scars. If you can get some of that, DO!

Also, if you get some of that sunburn relief stuff with novacaine or zylocaine or whatever they put in it, that might help.

The reason it still hurt for so long is that skin keeps burning even after it's lost contact with whatever burned it in the first place.

I hope you're feeling better today!

Thanks everyone :) I went to bed with my little cup of ice water by my side. I kept it in there until I was almost asleep. Then I took it out. It burned for a couple of minutes but I made it through! After I went to sleep, it was fine. This morning it doesn't burn at all. It's just a big hard patch of skin. It feels tight when I move my thumb around.
Hopefully it heels quickly and safely.

My mom always has an aloe vera plant in her kitchen, and I grew up breaking off a piece and slathering (small) burns with the ooze! It does help, really. Might be a good investment. I hope you feel better! :)

Put in icewater or hold under cold water.
In addition
I've also found that 2000mg of vitamin C taken immediately (and additonal amounts if pain returns) will often kill the pain and reduce the inflammatory reaction (swelling and blister).

See this article from the University of Maryland Medical chool on burn treatment

Search for the term Antioxidants on the page for info on use of Vitamin C and E:
