I'm ruining my teenager's life

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: I'm ruining my teenager's life
By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 04:55 pm:

She flew down the stairs to tell me that Jump5 was doing a mall concert in Chicago somewhere on October 11th and she knew they didn't have school that day.

I burst her bubble when I told her I had to work that day. The schedule has been out for probably 2 weeks already and we just found out about the concert today.

So, she is in tears now. Poor baby. She got to see them in concert August 2003, and March 20, 2004, so it isn't like she has never seen them! In fact, she is a member of the fan club, so she got to see them up close and personal before the concert and then they signed autographs after the concert. So, it's not like she hasn't had any exposure to them.

Oh well, that's life, as my mom would say. She of course, will probably be crabby the rest of the day now.

I sure didn't get everything I wanted as a kid, either! LOL! The thing is, the concert probably wouldn't be very long and it would be about a 3-hour drive there and a 3-hour drive home for a concert that would last an hour if we were lucky!

Oh yeah, I really don't KNOW Chicago, either. So getting somewhere would be a challenge. The last time I was ever around Chicago was in 1988, when we went to visit the BIL and SIL in Ft. Wayne, IN.

Those teens can really do a number on us, can't they?

I've developed quite the thick skin to this sort of thing, having gone through not one prior teen, but two, so when now-teen #3 begins the 'guilt-trip', the classic responses are:

"Cry me a river, build a bridge, and get over it"

"Want some cheese with that whine?"

"Oh, WAH"

(I know, I'm so unfeeling:))

By Kernkate on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 05:49 pm:

LOL Kay...with an 18 yo DS I know exactly what you are saying.
Sometimes the answer just has to be "No" and as mad as they get they will get over it!

By Mommyathome on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 06:01 pm:

Awww....poor girl. But, it does sound like she's seen them plenty! Lots more than most girls her age, I'm sure.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 06:07 pm:

I like that:

Cry me a river, make a bridge and get over it!

She's so deprived. They have come to Milwaukee twice in the last year.

By Paulas on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 06:52 pm:

Just tell her it could be worse...I could be her mother and I don't know who they are!

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 08:49 pm:

It sounds like she loves Jump5 (whoever they are LOL) as much as I loved New Kids on the Block....man, it took guts for me to admit THAT! LOL :) Now i'll be embarrassed to show my face here again LOL!

The joys of teenagers! Don't worry, she'll get over it.

By Christylee on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 10:53 pm:

I'm right there with you on the New Kids on the Block so don't be embarrassed. lol... I even watched the "get the bands back together thing" on VH1 a couple of weeks ago. I however have NO clue as to who Jump5 is! lol...

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 10:55 pm:

She calmed down after supper! She sure had an academy-winning performance before that, though! My daughter the drama queen! We made spaghetti and meatballs tonight for supper and she wanted to help make meatballs.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 06:17 am:

LOL Drama Queen is just another word for a female teen... We go through mini fits every couple of days. I think the hardest part of dealing with it is she is so rational most the time, then she gets in a tizzy and man you can't say a word to her. Ah well, soon enough it will all be over. And our journal of remember whens will be full for future pay backs. LOL Let the fun begin..

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 07:44 am:

Ditto Bobbie! There's a reason people say *there is life after teenagers*!

By Rayanne on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 09:04 am:

Patti, I LOVED The New Kids On The Block too, so you are not alone.

It sounds like she is handeling it fine now. I'm glad. I remember when I used to act like that when my parent's said no. Sometimes, for fun, I will act that way with Chris if he says that we can't go somewhere. LOL.

Jump 5 IS cool...! I felt that way when I found out that Third Day was going to be just "down the road" from me...on a school/work night (even though I've seen them before)! Teens are so dramatic, and I'm sure it IS ruining her life at this point, but that's the way it goes. My kids think they're deprived because they have never been to Disney. I keep telling them that nowhere does it say it's a kid's God-given right to go to Orlando, and at 42, I've STILL never been there! Hang in there, Mom... :)

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 02:52 pm:

When Jump 5 had the Meet and Greet before the March 20th concert, I got to go backstage and meet them, too. Sarah is really the only one had the "membership", but Emily and I went too, and they didn't make us go back to our seats. They are really nice kids! Brandon gave Sarah a friendly hug when she said Happy Birthday to him!

By Kay on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 08:58 pm:

When I read some of you talking about "New Kids on the Block", I felt really old! My heartthrob was Davy Jones of "The Monkees". :)

By Imamommyx4 on Sunday, October 3, 2004 - 11:53 pm:

Ditto on Davy Jones. And what about Bobby Sherman from "Here Come the Brides"?

By Cocoabutter on Monday, October 4, 2004 - 12:10 am:

Anyone remember Corey Hart?

I would tell my kid that if he/she can find another responsible person (preferably adult) to go with, and if they could pitch in and do extra stuff around the house, they could go. That would put the power in the kids' hands and if they don't go, they can't blame it on mom!
