Cleaning cabinet doors
I have seen a few posts lately about how bad Murphy's Oil soap is for the wood finish. I had bought some to clean my cabinet doors, but I guess maybe I shouldn't now. Does anyone have any recommendations? What do you use to clean your cabinet doors and drawer fronts?
Meredith, I need to polish mine, but I need to do research too! I hope someone posts! I've been just using a damp cloth to wipe them down. I wonder if lemon oil is ok? I use that for my furniture.
Cabinet Magic!!! It's the quickest and best I've used. It's wonderful! Ame
I wipe them with a damp cloth and occasionally use lemon oil.
Linseed oil and turpentine - I use three parts turpentine to one part linseed oil. The turpentine cuts through any softened old finishes, while the linseed oil feeds the wood so that it won't dry out. If this produces an acceptable looking result, and you aren't prepared to spend much more time on the piece, then finish it off with another linseed oil/turpentine mixture - only reverse the proportions. A mix of three parts boiled linseed oil to 1 part turpentine will give the wood a very natural finish, with just a delicate sheen to it. The turpentine simply helps the wood to absorb the oil, and speeds up drying time.
I bought the Cabinet Magic and it worked great. Thanks Ame! I had a lot of grease/oil on the cabinets near the stove and it took it right off. The cabinets are in really good shape-the house was built in 1987, so not too old-they just needed a good cleaning. We just had hardwood floors installed in the kitchen so I am going through the whole room cleaning out everything. I should be able to finish today.
