Naughty dog/good dog
Yeah, it was kind of both! I took Jasmine outside to go potty. She starts tearing off across the yard. Usually that means she saw a rabbit and usually stops by my neighbor's trees. Nope, not this time. She goes tearing off across the street, little brat! Doesn't at all listen to me to come back! She usually does. By the time I get 3/4 of the way across the street, she is already coming back, with her tail between her legs. She knew I was mad! The good news? They had a little dog and I didn't hear any growling! She isn't always good with other dogs. Apparently, she was okay with this encounter. I never spoke to the other people and they didn't say anything to me. It was too dark out to see their faces. (our neighborhood doesn't have that much light at night. Maybe I should have had a leash on her, but I have taken her out to go potty dozens of times that she stays right by me and doesn't run off like that. We were lucky no cars were coming! Well, off to go outside one more time before bed. Guess I will put the leash on! No need for a black dog to go off running into the night!
Dawn, I used to have a cocker spaniel that I would let out the front door. One morning a 2a.m. he was whining to go out. I was so sleepy, I walked to the door not thinking, left him out, then I smelled SKUNK!!!! Too late the dog cornered the skunk and boy did he stink! I was up all night bathing the dog. The sad part is the skunk also sprayed the side of the house. It wouldn't have been bad, but our foundation is stone and we have a brick chimney and it was also sprayed. Everyday when the sun hit the brick and stone IT STUNK! I tried everything and you could still smell it. I was actually glad to see winter come, for some reason the cold got rid of the smell.
Great that she was friendly towards the other dog. My dog absolutely must have a leash on or she takes off rapidly to parts unknown. And, though she's not a mean dog, I never know how she's going to react to other dogs. With her it seems to depend on the breed and size of the dog, and lastly, on how the other dog is reacting to her. I would have been terrified if I had been in your shoes - I always am when my dog gets away from me.
I didn't realize there was another dog until I got across the street. Our streets aren't real bright. We could use some more sodium vapor lights! We have some here, but not on all the streets. I was more mad, than afraid. She really is a "velcro" dog, so she doesn't usually wander off.
