Found a lost dog...
On my our way to school yesterday, we were stopped in a line of several cars in the middle of the road because a fat little chihuahua was walking down the center line trying to get in everyone's car. I pulled into a driveway nearby and the little dog ran up to my car and put his paws inside when I opened my door. He was a dirty little thing, but definitely someone's pet. I sat there for a few minutes looking up and down the road to see if I could see anyone looking or calling for a dog, but all houses had doors closed, shades drawn, etc. I had to get my dd to school, so the little dog came with us because he had no fear of cars, and the traffic was only going to get heavier as people were going to work and school at that time. We drove slowly and looked for signs everywhere of someone missing a dog and saw nothing. I did the same thing on my way back home. We have put signs up stating we found a small dog and to call our number to describe, called the local animal shelter, and called the animal hospital with our contact info in case someone looks for him. We are also watching our local "ad" tv station for anything on a missing pup. He's a very good dog and gets along well with our cocker spaniel. He also is fine with our children. So, here we are stuck with another dog until hopefully the owner shows up.
You may want to call around and see if any of the shelters or vets have a microchip reader. I would explain that you found a stray and ask if they would check the dog for a chip for you. If the dog is chipped, you should be able to get the owner contact information right away.
Hmmm....When I called our shelter and animal hospitals they never mentioned that. I looked on the dog for a tattoo or scar of some kind, but found none. We are in a very rural area where microchipping is not a very common thing. But that's a good idea. I will check on that.
When we found a dog, it stayed one night and the owners called the spca and they were given our number, and came and got it the next day. Oh, bye the way my dog baily is a daddy, yup , the other dog was in heat, she had 4 pups, which all went out to their family members.
Well, we have a female cocker spaniel that is just over a year old, and this is a male, so we were worried about that at first, but then we checked a little bit, and he has been "fixed" so we don't have to be concerned there! Still waiting, and have heard nothing. No one has called the hospital or shelter looking for a missing chihuahua, so we still have him! This is the third day and counting!
