Healthier version of goldfish
My dks love goldfish and cheezits. They are cursed with a mother that will not buy products with partially hydrogenated anything in them. Yesterday at the grocery store I found "cheddar bunnies" by Annie's all natural foods. Now I have tried plenty of "fake" cheezits and so far they all taste like cardboard. These taste just like goldfish crackers. Here's a link if anyone is interested. http://www.annies.com/products/crackers.html
Bummer, my kids can't have them due to nut allergies. We dislike Cheezits, but Goldfish crackers are a staple at my house. We don't have any potato chips, Twinkies, soda or other junk food so I can live with Goldfish. Moderation is the key. We tend to snack more on fruits/veggies, cheese, cereal (Cheerios, Kix) and popcorn (air popped) anyway.
Thanks, Colette! I'll have to try those. I like Annie's products. I like the Kashi products too. They have a TLC cracker which is like a Cheez-it. Also, I've been buying goldfish again because they are now making them without partially hodrogenated oils. We couldn't make it in our house without chips! DD loves Baked Lays with salsa for a snack and DH takes Baked Lays to work sometimes for with his lunch. I personally like to make my own toasted whole wheat pita chips! You can season them anyway you want! Do they still make Twinkies?
Yeah, they still make twinkies. I see them at the store. (Remember how "wholesome" they said they were? Yikes!)
Gold fish is advertising it doesn't have transfat. What is unhealthy about them? I don't like them anyway, just interested.
I'm glad to hear Goldfish are taking away the partially hydrogenated oils! My youngest loves them. We have tried the "cheddar bunnies" and I thought they were really good, but DD still wants her Goldfish. I haven't eaten a Twinkie in a very long time! I used to like them right out of the freezer.
http://www.bantransfats.com/products.htm FYI they still have partially hydrogenated oils in them so watch what you consider a serving.
That's an interesting article, Colette. I went and read the labels on the Goldfish we have and there is no hydrogenated oils listed at all. So, does that mean it's in there, but not listed? I have seen on margarines where it will say "no trans fats" and hydrogenated oils are listed. I'm happy to see they are coming out with a better shortening too! Gosh, I have only used it once all year! It just looks like it would clog your arteries, doesn't it?
Wow, that is interesting about the Goldfish. There is a fairly new "Wild Oats" store that opened up in Portland-I have been wanting to get over there and check out their store. There is a place in our town that has a lot of organic items, items without transfats and preservatives, but the store is pretty small and the prices were very high last time I was there.
Maybe they have the option of not listing it when the amount is below federal guidelines. It's probably ok as long as you watch portion sizes. Meredith, it is so hard to find organic foods cheap. Trader Joes is usually pretty good - but you need to read their labels as well, and my mother told me another all natural grocery store just went in to Portsmouth, but she couldn't remember the name. I am going to check it out next time I am up there. Sometimes, although I have not done this, you can buy the products online.
