Anyone have a really small income?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2004: Anyone have a really small income?

If so, tell me please that it can be done! Right now I am looking for work (and with little education will probably only get a fast food job, if that), and my DH gets $278 every 2 weeks in unemployment. What a mess we are in. :-( I am worried we will not even be able to pay our rent (we are currently $150 behind, with that plus the monthly rent due on the 15th). HAs anyone been in our shoe, long term? PLease advise!

Go to your local salvation army & get help with your rent.
Go to your local Family services & get food stamps & see what other services they can offer.

Wow..I have no advice for you, but I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers that things turn around for you soon.

Salvation Army will help with rent? I know they have emergency food, but I didn't know they helped monetarily. I put in a call and left a message this morning for food - I will bring up other help when they call back. Thanks! :-)

Vicki thanks for the prayers. :-)

They do here. I will also keep you in my prayers. Do you have a Council of Community Services there? Thay may also help. Don't forget churches.

You can get better employment than fast food.
Hospitals In my opinion are good places to work
There are many areas that do not require ay education. Food service, enviromental service, patient care and various secretary or health unit coordinator(secratary) positions that the hospital will train you for. I suggest you look into those. I have seen many people including college students and people with only high school educations have those jobs. They start out at around 7 if you work in enviromental or food and up to 9 if you work patient care.
I currently have worked at the hospital while my husband is in school for almost 3 years now. I started at 9.43 plus shift diff and the hospital gave paid training. The traingin was about 3 weeks. I work as a patient care assisstant and have pretty good benefits.

Thanks Juli for the vote of confidence. UNforunately I have to work evenings or midnights as we are homeschooling, and my dd has health isues which require frequent doctor's visits and hospitalizations. I appreciate your input though! :-)

I do not have a college degree and I have worked at daycares and they paid pretty well. It wasn't the best money, but it helped.

Short-term - For some quick cash you can sell CDs, books, videos, DVDs and computer games if you have a Half-Priced Bookstore or CD shops that buy these types of items.

Long-term - I have a friend who works for Marriott as a front desk clerk overnights so she can be home with her kids during the day. It doesn't require post high school graduation. Just another idea to throw out there.

I'm in the same boat...

Dh hasn't worked since the end of May due to a knee injury. NO unemployment, no short term disability (available at his workplace).

We are living off nothing:(

He has just started back to work, but I have to drive him 50 minutes one-way. I'm on the rode 3 and 1/2 hours a day. Miracles do happen. Pray specifically, I have seen it many times this summer:) God does listen.

If you would like to email me, please do so, I will give you my email address.

I have been selling my unwanted items over ebay and it has helped.

BTW, we have a computer and internet due to dh finishing a Bachelor's degree online and then he will be working for a Master's degree online.

I'm praying for you.

I thought we had a small income, I still think we have a small income, but I'm finding out it's not as small as some people.:) DH gets Social Security Disability, the kids get a check every month also ($91 a month) and I work at a little convenience store down the road for $6.50 an hour.
The only thing I know to suggest is to call your local social services office (it's health and human resources here) but they can usually get you on Food Stamps relatively quickly and I know they have other programs to help people in your situation. Go there!! Ask questions!! Usually if they can't help you out, they have suggestions and phone numbers. I know I have had to utilize a lot of this in the past. Yes, it can be done!!! :):):)
Good luck to you!!

((((hugs)))) I hope things work out for you. Maybe check with your church to see if they can help you get back on your feet.

By Juli4 on Tuesday, August 31, 2004 - 06:12 am:

well then my suggestion is perfect for a hospital is open 24 hrs a day and where as most businesses are not. So you can pretty much get whatever shift you want. I used to work 3-11p now I work 7a -7p so just look if you want.

Not that this is a fun job for most
but cleaning offices and other places not open
in the evening is an idea. I have made $70
for 3 hours of cleaning in the past. Good luck
to you. Things will get better.

Have you heard back from the Salvation Army? I have been thinking of you and hope you are finding some help! Please keep us updated!!

You can make a lot of money waiting tables.
I only work 20 hours a week and I bring home at least $250 a week. It doesn't take any education, and its generally easy to do. You just have the be willing to work hard and fast. I think waiting tables is the best option for people who need money. Plus, you start making cash as soon as you get trained.
