Another BC question....

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2004: Another BC question....
By Melana on Sunday, August 29, 2004 - 11:57 pm:

Does anyone know what kind of BC you can take while you're nursing?? I just want to get on something long enough to get my tubes tied, but I don't want to have to quit nursing to get on BC. TIA....and sorry about the kind of repeat post!

When I was nursing we used condoms. Not ideal, but hormone free. Serves the purpose for short term BC.

You can use a pill called the minipill, I "think" its called "Micr(Sorry cant remember the name)something or another..
Its a progesterone only pill, safe to use while nursing. I used it after my 2nd was born. I cant use the regular pill as it gives me highbloodpressure...Ok I think its called Micronor?
I will not go on any birthcontrol now, as my husband is getting fixed sometime in the next month or so.. But with working fulltime, and going to school at night, dont really know when he will have time. But, I refuse to do pills anymore, and hes ok with condoms, but will like it even more when he doesnt have to use those.

You can use the minipill (and Micronor rings a bell, Jackie :)). However, my OB told me that it works by thickening cervical mucus, not preventing the release of an egg like regular BCP. I used it for the first 6 months after birth since with exclusive bfeeding that also offers additional protection, but after that I got too nervous. We got pregnant on the first attempt twice, so we're pretty darn fertile and I didn't want to depend on thick mucus alone to prevent the swimmers from getting through (ick--I know). After 6 months we switched to condoms and used those until DS was weaned.

You can use the depo shot, 1 shot lasts 3 months & it is around $55.00

I was on Loestrin 21 but my body didnt take it well and I gave up breastfeeding quite easily so went back on Alesse 28. Good luck.

talked to DH last night about him having a vasectomy...he said "no one's going near my little men with a knife!" but there's this new procedure that doesn't use a scalpel...nope, he just won't do it..grrrrrrrrrr, oh well

DD is 2 months old and I'm nursing also, I'm taking the minipill until October when my DH gets the Big V!!!!:)

By Tink on Monday, August 30, 2004 - 11:51 pm:

My dh wouldn't have a vasectomy but I had my youngest via C-Section so they just tied me up at the same time. It was a lot more painful than the other C-Sections I had. Before that, I used the Depo shot (I don't recommend it) and condoms while I was nursing.

My sister is using the depo shot. The mini pill they gave her had to be taken every day at the same time or she would end up with break through bleeding. A BC stops ovulation, a mini pill makes the lining thicken on the vaginal wall but it doesn't stop you from ovulating. And with two small children and her husband overseas the last thing she can remember is to take a pill everyday at the same exact time. She plans to do depo until she stops breast feeding and then she will go on the patch until they are ready to start trying to get PG again.

Andi, my DH has gone for a Vasectomy consultation. The doctor recommended using another form of BC after the big V, until several sperm tests have been taken and there are NO swimmers. He said this could be for as long as 6 mos.. Just thought I'd mention that! :)
