DH had bike accident

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2004: DH had bike accident
By Missymelissy on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 10:20 am:

Tuesday afternoon I received a phone call from a stranger saying DH had a bike accident and this guy told me where DH was. The accident happened on a bike path under a bridge. He told DH to stay until someone came to get him. I got DS and hopped in the car and drove to where DH was. He was up and walking around with a gash on his chin and cut on his knee. I called my Aunt and Uncle who live close to where DH was and had my Uncle take DH's bike to their house and he took DS. I took DH to the hospital.

When I got to DH he clearly had a concussion, every minute he was asking what time it was and where exactly he was (what bridge he was under). DH knew who I was and who DS was, what his address was, and his phone #. He didn't know what day it was.

The hospital did a CAT scan and it came back clear, good news. Bad news, DH has a broken hand, not a bad break. DH has 3-5 stitches in his chin. Some bruising around the side of his eye, on his leg and his shoulder really hurts. DH has to wear the cast for 4-6 weeks. He sees a plastic surgeon on Monday for his hand, even though the Dr's didn't think he'd need surgery they still referred him. He also gets his stitches out Monday night.

DH doesn't remember what happened, he vaguely remembers leaving work. We may never know what happened. I just thank GOD this stranger found him and was able to call me. DH doesn't remember talking to anyone or giving out our phone number, but he did.

DH stayed home from work on Wed and Thurs and went back today. It's very difficult for him to type and of course his job is one that requires him to type. I just spoke with him and he seems to be managing pretty good at work. The people he works with are good and if there's any problems they will call me.

I hope DH has nothing else happen - he's gone through enough this year -- pneumonia and now this.

DS has been so good through this -- he stayed with my Aunt and Uncle until we were done at the hospital, then on Wed he went to my cousin's for the day and early evening and played with his two cousins. Thankfully I have family close by to help out. I know our neighbours would have helped and have offered to help in any way they can. Sometimes its just nice knowing you have family close by. I just wish DH's family was a little closer. Oh well, we're seeing some of his family this weekend.

Best wishes and wellness for your DH. Sounds like pretty scare fall. Glad he is healing. I know what you mean about having family near by. I would just hate to live far from my extended family.

I forgot to mention ---- DH DID have his bike helmet on -- Thank goodness!!!

Oh that is terrible news, I am glad he is on the mend, I could not imagine what it was like for you when that man came to the door. Is it a possibiliy that he fell from the bridge? or is the bike trail under the bridge? Did you catch the name of the fellow who found him? Here in our city our news paper has a beef's and bouquets so when someone does something like that , you can put it in the news paper. I am glad to hear he is ok, it will be tough going for a while for him from the sounds of it.I was wondering why they would take the stiches out so soon though that does not seem like a long time to have them in.

I am glad he wasn't seriously hurt & that someone was there to help him.

By Missymelissy on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 11:02 am:

The man called me to let me know about the accident. The bike trail is under the bridge and there is a little ditch beside it and we are wondering if DH was going too fast and maybe tried to go around the ditch and clipped it, we don't know and unfortunately DH doesn't know.

I do have the fellow's name, thank goodness for call display and I have spoken to him since his call to me - once DH is feeling better I would like to either meet with this person or send them something as a thank you.

The Dr at the hospital said the stitches could come out in 5-7 days, the accident happened on Tuesday.

Scary. My dh is an avid road and mountain biker. He's never gotten hurt on the road bike and at least when the mountain bike accidents occur he is always with someone. My dh bikes to work too(40 miles each way - does not do it every day) and it is NOT on a bike path, so I am always worried when he's late. I hope your dh is better soon.

Thank heaven for the helmet. Be sure he buys a new one before he rides again - I have read that once the helmet has been in an accident you cannot rely on it to be as good.

I had a concussion from a fall on ice about 10 years ago, and I remember that it took me almost a month to fully recover. I hope your dh takes it as easy as he can.

Sorry I read your post wrong, for some strange reason I had in my head that the man came to the door. Glad your dh is ok.

By Missymelissy on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 11:43 am:

Ginny -- The nurse at the hospital told us to check the inside foam part of the helmet to see if it was cracked and if it was to take it back to where we got it from and usually they will replace it for free.

I did check his helmet and it is cracked. Now to try and remember where he bought the helmet. I'm sure if we go to a place that sells the same make of helmet they would replace it -- I will have to look into this closer. But for now, I don't think DH will be riding again this year.

Mrse --- not a problem. It might have been better for me if he had come to the door, then I could have taken him with me to get DH. Oh well, I managed, I had a pretty good idea where he was.

Thank God for the kindness of strangers. I'm glad your dh is going to be okay. Good for him for wearing a helmet! My 6yo neighbor ended up with a concussion while wearing a helmet, also. Her mom replaced her helmet, too. Take care of your man. :)
