I went to my hometown to visit my sister this past weekend. I hadn't been there in about 3 years. It's a 7 hour drive for me from LA to AL. My best friend from high school (we were maid/matron of honor in each other's weddings), whom I still keep in touch with, lives in GA about 4 hours away, but her mom still lives in our hometown too. I emailed a week ago and asked if there was any chance she was going to be "home" the same weekend I was there. She said she had just been to visit her mom 2 weeks ago, so she couldn't make it. Oh well...*sigh*

Imagine my surprise when on Saturday morning my sister told me that Amy had called and was in town!!! Amy's DH had gone to a PromiseKeepers conference, so after she dropped him off at the church she decided on the spur of the moment to load up her 3 kids (14 mos, 3 y/o, 6 y/o) and drive 4 hours to our hometown. She said that she literally was packed and on the road in 20 minutes with her 3 kiddos in tow. It was such a spontaneous decision (VERY unlike her) that her DH didn't even know she had come (she knew she'd be home before he got back from his retreat) and he tracked her down at her mother's house at midnight Friday night. She didn't even tell her mother she was coming--just arrived on her doorstep. This is so out of character for Amy that it makes me LOL.

Needless to say we had a wonderful time. I had not seen her in 4 years. We (with our kids) met at a local nature/history park run by my BIL and my sister and 2 neices were there as well. We had a picnic together, walked the nature trail, the kids played hide-and-seek, and then we had ice cream sodas in the "period pharmacy" onsite. It was so fun to catch up with her in person and it brought such joy to see our kids playing together. Her DD fell in love with my neice and was holding on to her arm even after being buckled into her carseat. We had a blast and I am so glad she decided to be spontaneous---hope she didn't get into too much trouble with DH
