Has any one ever been here or live by here? My DS Tom is headed out tomorrow for a vacation of camping and hiking here and I was just wondering what it is like?
TIA:)

Me Me Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love it there. DH and I spent a week there when we were *dating*. My friend's family has a place there.

Tell him to be sure to hike up to the top of the dunes for sunset one night, he can ask any of the locals where to go, they'll know. It's beautiful, and there's always a crowd of people doing that.

Be careful of the rip tides - there can be some strong undertows along there.

I've never camped there, we stayed in a condo. We spent most of our time on the beach and in the dunes. But it appeared to be a good place for a vacation for all ages.

Someone posted a couple years ago that it wasn't a good place for teens to live because there weren't enough activities for them there. I think it's mostly a vacation/resort area these days, he should have fun.

I've been once, and a tropical storm hit our first night. My parents go every year, in September. It's fabulous!! I agree with Karen about the dunes, and the rip tides. Granted when I went the storm hit, but the only ones brave enough to surf were hurt left and right!!

Thanks, I will be sure and tell him tomorrow when he calls about the dunes and the riptides.

Hi we go all the time it is only 2hrs away. He will have a good time. We just got back 2 weeks ago from being there for a month. Where is he camping? We stay at the KOA, it is a fun campground. The locals are really nice and the surf is great.

He is now on his way back home he left NC this morning and was headed to Washington, DC for some sight seeing. He said they had a great time, as for where they camped they moved around, last I heard he had stayed on Hatteras Island. He said they saw the light house there. He said he would go back in a heartbeat.

Just two years ago we spent a wonderful week in Kitty Hawk North Carolina. The weather couldn't have been better. We spent a little time sight seeing, and all the rest of the days were spent on the beach. We ate out each night. Great Seafood!!! The beaches there are beautiful. You should see the size of some of the homes along the oceanfront!

We visited four of the accessible NC lighthouses, Currituck Beach, Bodie Island, Hatteras and Ocracoke. We also saw the Wright Brother's Memorial and the First Flight Museum there. We climbed Jockey's Ridge, the highest sand dune on the East coast. We went to Roanoke Island and saw the place where they do The Lost Colony Play. It is only presented during the summer, but we plan to go down for a day trip to see it later. We saw where the first English child was born on American soil. Virginia Dare, granddaughter of Governor. John White, was born on August 18, 1587, and where 110 colonists, including women and children vanished without a trace. We saw where Edward Teach, (Blackbeard, the pirate) was caught, killed and beheaded. We saw The British Cemetery, where the bodies of English seamen who died helping to defend our shores are buried under the Union Jack.

We rose before dawn, and walked on the beach to watch the sunrise, and stood on the west side of the island to watch the sunset. We drove from the northern tip above Corolla and Currituck to the furthest south you can travel by car on Ocracoke Island, over the bridges and ferries that connect these Barrier Islands. It really is a beautiful area.

We're going back for another week in early October after all the tourists are gone.
