Camping tips
We went camping this weekend(yes-with a month old baby!).....we had an awesome time..... But I was wondering what other people cook when they go camping..... Also, any hints for camping with kids or babies.... We always make a lot of barbequed meat. I make a potato salad and a pasta salad-which usually lasts about 2 days. What do you guys make that won't go bad or need to be kept cool? We do smores for the kids, and we bring a lot of junk food(chips, cookies, etc...) We bring tons of blankets but usually end up freezing(epecially this weekend). We have air mattresses and put a tarp under the tent..but everything feels so damp at night. Don't worry-the kids were very warm. I brought every fleecy blanket I owned for them. But I was the coldest....... fiona
Fabulous Foods: Campers I always take warm clothes and heavy blankets when I camp. I put the kids in sweats or winter PJ's and I wear sweats. It can get down right chilly in the middle of the night.
Try finding a campsite with a lean-to. It's basically a shelter with 3 walls, a raised floor and a roof. Keeps you dry and warmer. As far as food goes...my rule is if I am camping we are eating at restaurants, but if that doesn't happen, then I bring things that are either already cooked or easy to cook - my oldest is a vegetarian so I usually bring single serving meal-size containers of chili, or lo-mein, or this indian food I found that you just boil water, put the bag in the water for 5 minutes and voila - a meal. I prefer to eat out though.
We do a lot of what you can make from chicken meals..LOL. For example we grilled chicken one night and made fajitas, breakfast we eat breakfast tacos, with chicken meat, lunch we take a break and eat walking salads (apples with peanutbutter and granola inside), then for dinner we chop up chicken and use it in chicken and dumplings.
We love to cook in the dutch oven! We always cook breakfast and dinner in the dutch oven. For lunch we do something like sandwiches and chips.
I'm told this is a good camping recipe, since it can all be made in one pan! No waiting for water to boil separately! I just know it's delicious! One Pan Spaghetti 1 lb. ground beef 5 c. water 2 envelopes spaghetti sauce mix I 6 oz. can tomato paste 2 T. butter 1 tsp. salt 7 oz. spaghetti broken In large heavy saucepan brown beef, drain. Add water, sauce mix, tomato paste, butter and salt. Bring to boiling. Add spaghetti. Cover and cook stirring occasionally till spaghetti is tender, about 20 minutes. Makes 6 servings.
