MUSHROOMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2004: MUSHROOMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(
By Rayanne on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 04:28 pm:

I have these mushrooms in my yard and I have no clue how to get rid of them!!!!!!!!!! They haven't been here at all this summer, but today, as I was walking up to my front door, I saw them. THEY ARE DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!! The reason I saw them is because THEY STINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are an orangy-pinky color when they open. Does anyone know how I can get rid of these? The smell is soooo bad, that I have to hold my nose to walk out of my house and they grow right infront of Rylee's window, so when it gets cooler, I can't even open her window. SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

If you've had much rain, they are awful. Are they, perhaps, stinkhorns. What you have to do is get them out as quickly as possible. I suggest you talk to your local garden center to learn if there is a safe way to treat the soil so that they won't grow again. In the meantime, put on some disposable plastic gloves and pull them up, putting them in a plastic bag and into the trash. Check every day to see if more are growing - you're right, they do spring up overnight and get to full growth quickly.

One reason to get rid of them, of course, is so that no children are tempted. I had some mushrooms in my front yard yesterday that my son said are definitely poisonous - he took a class in toxic plants when he was working at the School of Vet - and that I should wash my hands very thoroughly after pulling them out ... which is why I recommend the disposable gloves.

We have some mushrooms too, they weren't there till we had a bunch of rain then all of a sudden POOF! there they are. Mine don't stink though, so i guess i am lucky. They are rather obscene looking, if you know what i mean. ;-)

I think that that is what they might be.
There are usually four pinky things sticking out of the ground. They kind of look like this. i. How can I get rid of them for good?

We had several of these last year. They stink and look like ALIENS! My lawn guy at the time dug them up by the roots and they never came back. I didn't want to go near them. :)

Definitely the phallic stinkhorn. The name is descriptive, isn't it. Here is a link to more information: http://www.bluewillowpages.com/mushroomexpert/phallaceae.html

The site says they are not poisonous, just obnoxious.

I called homedepot today and they don't have anything to get rid of them. I guess I just have to wait until I can smell them and have Chris remove them. UGH!!!! I HATE THESE THINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read some advice recently from a gardening specialist, and he said that since a mushroom is a fungus, an herbicide wouldn't help...however, it's best to pull them out of the ground when you see them.

Good luck - I get the regular toadstool-type mushrooms, not the one you mentioned - YUK!
