Have you started *school shopping* yet?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2004: Have you started *school shopping* yet?
By Mommyathome on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 04:04 pm:

We haven't!

I was just going through the girls closet and realized that this will be an expensive year for us. We basically will be starting from scratch. They only have one pair of jeans that they can still wear to school. The rest are too small. It is hard when they are both the exact same size....it's like buying for twins. We have to buy 2 of everything. No hand-me-downs!

I want to take a weekend, in a couple of weeks, and take the girls up to Salt Lake and do some shopping. Maybe even stay over night in a hotel. Just for fun. Hmm....now I just have to figure out where all the extra money is going to come from!

lalalalalala - fingers in ears - I can't hear you because school starting means I go back to work - lalalalalalalala

My sister just went school shopping for her children (ages 4 & 6) and she only spent about 20 bucks for a load of outfits. *Old Navy* I think it is the best store ever. I can't even imagine shopping anywhere else. They have stuff on sale all the time and even the regular priced items are not going to break you. Although The Childrens' Place is a good one too. Good Luck, I don't have to go "school shopping" yet but I still have to go "season shopping" for my girls lol. And I can't wait! Fun Fun Fun.

I haven't gotten the supplies like crayons and all of that yet, but dd has gotten a few outfits over the summer. She despertly needs some jean shorts though. I don't even want to think about long pants. She is tall and thin and I have the hardest time getting things that are long enough that don't fall down on her!! Oh, to have such problems!! LOL

By Debbie on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 09:49 pm:

My older ds has to wear a uniform this year. I had to order everything, so I did it early to make sure I had the correct sizes. Everything fit and ds is all ready to go. I just need jeans for my youngest ds and a few new shirts. I am passing down shirts from his brother. He thinks it is great to wear the stuff that his brother has outgrown. I hope he continues to like it. Oh, and I forgot shoes. They each need a new pair.

By Annie2 on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 10:04 pm:

I have purchased all of their supplies.

I took my two little girls shopping a few days ago. They each picked out three bottoms and three tops. They are the same size, so it doubles their wardrobe when they share.

My 7 year old son could care less about new clothes. He doesn't NEED anything but I picked up a few items to start out new.

I have to take my 13 year old dd this weekend. I am dreading it. She is so picky. And wants to go a zillion places. Aeropostale and Old navy pretty much.

It's tax-free week this week so I am doing most of the shopping this week.

They all got new book bags this year. We already picked up those.

I've bought almost everything on my 7 y/o's list, but I'm waiting until my 10 y/o gets home from camp to take him to get school supplies. As far as clothes go, they both have to wear uniforms and I bought those about a month ago. Their shirts from last year still fit and are in good condition. I had to buy all new shorts, but we have a huge used clothing sale at the school and I got everything there. By the time I sold their outgrown uniforms and bought new ones, I actually made a profit of about $8. :) Our big school splurge is new shoes and we are going to get those next week. School here starts 8/16.

By Mommierenee on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 08:47 am:

You should check ebay, I got a lot of my daughters back to school clothes on there! I didn't have as much luck with my son's clothes though.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 08:48 am:

We will start buying school supplies this weekend, then gradually start working on new clothes.

By Mommierenee on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 09:53 am:

I never thought about ebay for those kinds of things either. I found backpacks, any kind of clothes & practically any other school supplies! LOL
Maybe that's why I can't made any money selling anything there, cause I buy too much! :)

By Janet on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 10:10 am:

My 14 yr old asked me yesterday, "Mom, can we go shopping for new school clothes?" LOL Bear in mind, we JUST went shopping for summer clothes she could wear to her trip to Washington! The high school isn't a/c, and it'll be HOT here until September! Anything we buy now will be worthless in a couple of months, and it's too early for fall stuff! Will she listen to this reasoning? Of course not!!
As for supplies, I just got my 4th grade list yesterday, so Wal-Mart, here we come! I asked an "older" mom about supplies for h.s. (dd is a freshman) and she just looked at me. "Get notebooks and paper," she said. That's all? "The teachers will tell you if they need anything special." *sigh*

I'm with Colette. LOL! I'm SO not ready for the Back to School scene yet. They don't start back until after Labor Day, which means we still have the whole month of August. Can you tell I love summer?! Suppose I should go through DK's clothes to see if they'll need anything, eh?

GA Mom here.

We start school August 9 (too early!) so, yes, we went school shopping. I have one going into second grade and a four year old. Of course, the four year old wanted to "shop" to so we bought her "back to church" clothes. She needed some new things anyway.

We hit Old Navy for school clothes and Target for school supplies. I spent a little over $200 but now, we have everything and are "ready to go".

Funny Part: Both my daughters are in a "pink" stage. I guess every little girl goes through it, they want pink clothes, pink bedrooms, pink hair ribbons, everything in pink. I call it the "pretty pink princess" phase.

So, I let them "go to town" I figured we need the stuff anyway, let 'em have the pink. As a result, both girls look like they have been hosed down in Pepto Bismol!!!! Two little blondes, with pink ponytail holders, pink shirts, pink pants, pink socks (with lace, of course) and pink Strawberry Shortcake tennis shoes with pink shoe laces....they even picked out pink notebooks and yes, we found some pink pencil sets!!!!!

Oh well, we are only young, once, right????!!!!:-)

We are done. PHEW!! We started early since we are out near Nevada right now where there is no sales tax. So I took the kids to the mall in Reno and got a lot done. I did the rest on-line and it should arrive in a few days. I am glad to have that covered since I know August is going to just fly by!

By Melissa on Saturday, July 31, 2004 - 04:47 pm:

We went to the beach for a few days and on the way back hit Old Navy. I probably spent about 200.00 there and we ordered a coulple cute outfits from Lands End We have to do shoes and sneakers and a backpack. And then we'll wait to see what tyoe of clothes she will want after she starts school, I don't want to buy too many dresses and then all everyone will be wearing is pants or visa versa.

By Fraggle on Monday, August 2, 2004 - 03:01 pm:

All I have ordered so far is my DD's backpack and snack/lunch bag. I've got to have her try on all her pants to see what has gotten too short. She wants to buy all dresses and skirts but I'm thinking that is not such a good idea if she wants to play on the jungle gym at school.

By Dawnk777 on Monday, August 2, 2004 - 08:06 pm:

Got most of Emily's school stuff last night! We still need a few more odds and ends. Sarah was gone on a sleepover last night, so she is sleeping now. So, maybe I will take her tomorrow!

I haven't really thought of clothes yet. I figure it's always warm though September, so we really don't need warm clothes yet.

By Amy~moderator on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:22 am:

I just finished last night - got all of the school supplies and uniforms. Phew! I'm glad it's done and over with!

By Eve on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 08:07 am:

I'm so glad I don't have to do real school shopping yet! Preschool doesn't count. LOL! Although, it is time to start looking through the Winter clothes and see what fits and what doesn't.:)

By Mommyathome on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 11:37 am:

School starts 3 weeks from today! I still haven't started yet. LOL Maybe the weekend after next.
My girls are getting excited for school to start. I've enjoyed having them home for the summer, but they are starting to get bored......and lazy! I'm anxious to get them back in school.

By Brandy on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 02:15 pm:

Okay i just have to ask anyone with boys when's the soonest your son has asked for boxers? my son is going to be 10 in Nov. and he asked for boxers today?I was like um okay so we got him some boxers lol..

By Bellajoe on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 02:24 pm:

My dd starts kindergarten on August 30 and ds has his first day of preschool in September. I don't think they need any supplies for kindergarten so i don't have to worry about that yet.

I do still need to do school clothes shopping. My dd has grown so much this summer, her long pants don't fit her any more and she will probably need new shirts too. Same with ds. Guess we will go somewhere that has a good sale going on.

By Tunnia on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 03:37 pm:

I finished my dd's back-to-school shopping about a week and a half ago because she starts school next Monday, August 9. My ds, however, doesn't go back until the day after Labor Day so I haven't even started his yet.:)

By Coopaveryben on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 05:55 pm:

Brandy, My son asked for Boxers when he was 4.

He already got his backpack and lunch box. For clothes, I was waiting for school to start to do mine, he has enough nice summer clothes.

By Tink on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 08:02 pm:

Brandy, My ds is 5 and he has been wearing them for about a year! Sorry for the off-topic post, just had to answer that.

By Katherine on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 08:20 pm:

Brandy...
Both of my boys have been wearing boxers for several years now. They refuse to wear "tighty whities" :) They crack me up!

Mine go to school TOMORROW. Thank you!!! I will have money again instead of having to pay so much for their summer activities. Gabe's day camp was $100 a week! Every summer I feel like I did when I had two in day care. We feel rich during the school year, LOL!

I am feeling very poor right now though because we went school clothes shopping last night and spent way too much money! They had essentially nothing to wear, But Scotty is very fashion concious and has to have certain items. I feel ashamed to tell that he had to have Nike Shox and I won't tell you how much we paid for them.

I got some great things for Gabe at the Children's Place. He is very very slender and they have pants with adjustable waists. Elastic inside the waistband that has button holes so that you can cinch them up as much as you need to.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 11:05 pm:

Brandy, DS started wearing boxers when he was 4. DH wears them and prefers them. So I thought DS might like some and he has never wore briefs again and he is 12 now. LOL Actually all his friends and DD's male friends wear boxers, go figure...

And I am done shopping until winter (YUCK) clothes come out. I need to buy DS a winter coat. The girls and DS boots. And thinking about buying DD (sophmore this year) a letter mans jacket for her birthday. But other than that they are set until spring or a growth spurt which ever comes first...
