DNC? or traveling to Boston?
Coming to the DNC? Better learn to speak our language up here... http://www.boston.com/travel/boston/articles/2004/07/25/listen_up_just_say_ah/
or bettah leahn to speak owah language up heah.
There was/is a commercial running on TV for an airline (can't remember which one) that shows people 'practicing' their Boston accents while the voiceover guy says something like, 'Boston...Only $59 one way'. LOL You guys do talk funny. j/k
And a sub sandwich in Southie - and noweyah else in the world - is a spuckie. Although you could get away with "grindah," but that's more Eastie. I was just saying this morning that everyone knows the vowels are dropped, and the the r's are ah's, but no one mentions the extra vowels we add whereever there is an o or an a, like "goowad" for God, and "bleearing" for blaring.
As someone who grew up in Eastie, I'd never heard of a "grindah" until I started working in downtown Boston, and even then, someone had to explain it to me!!! Like it was a whole different world instead of right across the "harbah"!!! We called them "subs"... plain and simple! Wicked easy!!!
Angela, hope the traffic mess isn't impacting your life. I'm far enough north so I am all set, I am wondering if dh is going to hit spillover (or spillovah) traffic coming home tonight.
Mornings shouldn't be a problem at all... though mt DH said he got stuck momentarily on 128 when State Police blocked the whole highway so a mini-bus could get onto 128 and they gave them a mile headstart and escorts before letting the traffic resume (that was on the way to Waltham). I have to say, I have never seen such an easy commute. Everyone must have taken the warning and stayed off the roads. Though the home commute will be the real test. ALL MAJOR ROADS, including the tunnel, 128 and 93 will be completely closed from 4pm to 1am!!!! I'll let you know if I'm in Hell tomorrow!!!
I wonder who was on the bus?
I grew up midstate, near Wustah. We called our subs grindahs. Now that I live in the south I call them griiiindeeers. My sister works downtown, takes the train from the south and didn't have any delays. The only people she saw were tourists. They all had their maps out while wearing their DNC 2004 t-shirts. I heard Kerry was boo'd at the Sox game last night.
It really was quite funny when they were booing Kerry! Could have been the large number of Democrats in the stands or his really bad pitch!! The pitch was even fodder for the sports shows on ESPN... Pardon the Interuption did a whole bit on it... how Bush did his pitch so much better! Humorous! Well, the commute home and the second morning have come and gone without a single hitch. Even the traffic reporters seem shocked by the emptiness of the roads. I think people really took things into consideration and are finding alternative routes, or they just took vacation!
Colette, that article was pretty funny. The weird thing is I wish I could say I miss it being up here in Maine now-but the Maine accent is very similar! And it will always be a Sub to me, too-when I went to UMASS Amherst (I grew up North of Boston) I had to ask someone what a grinder was!
LOL! Too funny! I've spent most of my life in New England so these hit home to me. I grew up in New Hampsha, ya know?! LOL! "Pawk your caw in Hawvawd Yawd." It has always annoyed me when they leave out the "R"s. LOL!
I'm personally very fond of the Bostonian accent. My Grandfather grew up in Hyde Park, and it makes me think of him.
