I do not know what this world is coming to - but I don't like it!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2004: I do not know what this world is coming to - but I don't like it!
By Ginny~moderator on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 01:34 pm:

Coming back from lunch (Center City Philadelphia), I saw a teenage girl - probably between 13 and 17 - wearing a t-shirt that said in big, prominent letters "Rock out with your c**k out!" !!!!!

This is the middle of the day - in downtown Philadelphia - and a girl, not a teenage or college boy or some beer belly jerk in a bar.

I don't know whether I more sad or angry, but I sure am disgusted.

If this girl were my child and I saw that t-shirt she would be grounded for 6 months minimum, and maybe sent to a convent school.

What on earth is going on?

By Ilovetom on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 01:43 pm:

Oh my God. My first instinct was to LOL!

Sad what young children know and do now days.

By Children03 on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 01:48 pm:

That is so awful. I agree, what on earth is going on?

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 02:10 pm:

Thats horrible. Can you just imagine the little girls I see on a daily basis here in Southern CA.? Its sad that i'm so used to it that I dont even do a double take anymore.

By Trisa on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 03:13 pm:

I think that just so awful!!
I also can't stand it when IM in the mall and see a little 11-12 year old girl with shorts on and the rearend of them says babe or bling bling
Why would a mother want some sick guy looking at her litle girls butt??????

By Andyjoy on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 03:42 pm:

I know moms who let their girls dress like that because it fullfills some unfullfilled desire of their own.

Example: This mother I know was a cheeleeder and self-proclaimed flirt in high school and is currently unhappy in her marriage. She thinks she "settled" for him and could have had any guy she wanted. (She actually says this aloud to friends). Therefore, she thinks it is "cute" when her 9 year old attracts the attention of boys and enjoys crushing their hopes with stinging put-downs because she is acting just like her mother did in school. She also thinks flirty little shorts with "Cheer" or "Angel" emblazoned across the butt are "adorable."

By Emily7 on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 04:09 pm:

The sad thing is the only reason the clothing manufactures make these clothes is because there is a market. If as mothers we said enough is enough & stopped buying it for them maybe they would stop being made. I think it is disgusting how we allow children to dress. There are so many pedophiles in this country & we are saying "Here look at this little girl".

By Janet on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 04:32 pm:

I had a woman customer come into the bank today wearing a T-shirt that read, "Words can't describe what I think of you...but "a##hole comes pretty close."

Hard to smile and treat her civil with that staring at me, but I managed.

By Momaroze on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 04:58 pm:

I'm sorry I couldn't help but to LOL. Seriously though, that is disgusting....very sad at the same time! Seems T'shirts as such are becoming so popular these days, ALTHOUGH I have never seen a T'shirt with a saying like that. Poor girl must have quite a past, doesn't sound like much of a future either. :(

By Amyj on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 05:19 pm:

My daughter is 4.5 and I can't believe the styles of clothing in the little girl section. What happened to letting them look like little girls? I mostly order from various places now because the mall selection is terrible.

By Marcia on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 05:59 pm:

My kids all have cute short sets that have something on the bum. They aren't tight shorts at all, and don't look older than their ages.
I don't dress them in sleezy styles, but I sure don't see anything wrong with these short sets.

I would NOT allow my daughters to wear the shirt you're describing, no matter what age they were!
It can't all be blamed on the parents, because some kids wear what their parents want when they walk out the door, and have a whole new wardrobe of preferred clothes that they change in to.

By Momaroze on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 07:43 pm:

So true Marcia.

By Amecmom on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 09:04 pm:

Do you thing she could even READ the words on her shirt? Now that's a sad thought.
Ame

By Sue3 on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 09:35 pm:

Thats gross !!!!!

By Colette on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 09:58 pm:

disgusting, I discovered when my oldest was just going into kindergarten that clothes shopping for girls was a lot harder than clothes shopping for boys.

I saw one of my former ext day kindergarten kids the other day in the supermarket she had a "bling bling" t-shirt on. She's about 7.

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 11:34 pm:

No way, would my teenage and almost-teenage daughters even want a shirt that said that! I wouldn't have to say "no!" because they would be offended, too!

By Feona on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 05:59 am:

The clothes are just getting worse. shorter and shorter. Soon the teens will be walking around in nothing. And teens are getting heavier and heavier. It is quite a sight.

By Mommierenee on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 02:32 pm:

The problem with the shorts that have words on the butt is that there's only ONE way for people to read what it says!!!
I agree about the clothes you find for little girls, you really have to be careful what message they are sending,& also what message you are teaching them to send when you're not around!

By Melissa on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 07:39 pm:

The 2 worst I 've had were client's one with the word bootylicious on her butt in rhinestones. And the other with a baby doll t shirt that said Want some? I wanted to say, Where is your mom?

By Cat on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 08:17 pm:

I have a 2yo I watch that showed up one day with a t-shirt that said "I'm to sexy for my diaper". I think she was still one at the time. Makes me glad I don't have girls. I just have to deal with my boys having to deal with it. :(

I may be niave here, but what does "bling-bling" mean? I've never heard of it.

By Kristie on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 11:17 pm:

I am so glad I have a boy. There was a 10 yr old girl out side my gate a few days ago talking to me about some drama that was going on in my getto neighborhood and she bent over to pick up a ball ds through out of the fence and it was vey obvious she was wearing string thong underware!!!!!!!!! I am a very blunt person and get along with her so I just said "please tell me you were out of clean panties and you had to borrow your moms". She told me her mom buys them for her and she thinks they are comfortable! Well I wear them and I think their comfortable but Thats not the only reason I wear them and I'm 28. I wear them to feel sexy and there is NO REASON a 10 year old should feel sexy. They were also pulled up on the hips so everyone could see. I was shocked.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 01:23 am:

Bling bling: is a hip hop slang term which refers to expensive jewelry and other accoutrements. The word gained acceptance in the mid- to late 1990s as a result of gangsta rap music and videos, which frequently glorified high class clothing, jewelry and other possessions. Specifically the song "Bling Bling" by The B.G initially popularized the term, along with other songs by The B.G.'s record mates, the New Orleans-based Cash Money Millionaires.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 01:54 am:

We have this debate every year about this time.. As long as the parents buy the junk they will keep making it. And the selections of decent clothing will be on the decline. It is all about them bucking society. Every generation has done it in one form or another.

I am concerned over the number of over weight children I am seeing now a days too. I am even more concerned with the fact that the "big" girls are just as guilty of being under dressed or in ill fitting clothing. Where are the parents of these children? And of all the cute under wear selections they have out there why on earth would you buy a 10 year old a thong????? My DD (14) wears Haines her way Bikini cut and they ride just below her low rise jeans just fine so there is no justification for buying a child a thong other than the fact that you are trying to live through that child.

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 09:43 am:

Bobbie, that is what kind of underwear my children wear (nearly 15 and 12). They are both grossed out by thongs.

By Emily7 on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 10:05 am:

I don't like thongs.
I agree with you Bobbie, if we stopped buying it they would stop making it.
My Mom knew everything that was in my closet. We had a good relationship & I trusted her opinion about fashion. I loved going shopping with my Mom, it was a bonding experience. We still go.
About the heavy set girls wearing low rise jeans & belly shirts, I just want to walk up tp them & explain that it is great that they feel have the body to wear this type of clothing, but that something else would be more appropriate.

By Janet on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 10:36 am:

Ummm...I hate to ask, but I've seen/heard it so much...what does "bling bling" mean?

By Trisa on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 01:04 pm:

Janet count up 4 posts and you will read what it means. Bobie was kind enough to tell those who do not know what it means.

By Sue3 on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 09:47 pm:

I hope no one is offended by this ......
Well, my 11 year old dd wanted a pair of thong
underwear and I said ,Anna why on earth would you want to wear a pair of under wear that feels like
a wedgie?
It`s like butt floss. Now she laugh`s when we see them in the store and has not asked for
any more.

By Janet on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 10:44 am:

Thanks, Bobbie! (I'm hopelessly behind in the current slang...actually, not a bad thing!) LOL

By Kaye on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 11:24 am:

I spent the weekend with my 12 year old neice, she wears a black wristband on occasion. Well they headed out, we were still in the pool. As we are leaving, my daughter says oh, she left her wristband, I pick it up, with plans to mail it back to her. On it is a cute little bunny and under it says "smells like butt". Oh my! I threw it in the trash...what a bad aunt...LOL

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 12:34 am:

Janet, No problem. I have a soon to be 15 year old and a 12 year old. The come home and tell us all about the latest slang terms.. Then DH and I go around making fun of the sayings. It can really lighten up a long day. LOL

By Emily7 on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 12:52 am:

In some schools the kids are wearing different colored wrist bands to signal what they are willing to do. If a guy walks up & asks for the band you have to do what that color signafies to him. It is just disgusting.
