Ideas for a patriotic room
We are redoing my 7 yr olds room and he wants it to be red, white and blue. I just wanted to get some creative ideas. I am not a creative person. Thanks...
I love the denim paint treatment. You could do this and have red, white & blue accents in the room. By making the accessories red, white & blue it will not be hard to change the room once he outgrows the theme. http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/la_walls_floors/article/0,2041,DIY_13992_2275864,00.html
Does he have a certain character that he likes, Spiderman, etc? if you you could do the room in a character that he likes and I'm sure you can find accessories in one of the three colors to do the room in a red white and blue. What color is paint in the room? Use that as your back ground and do a border in one or both of the other colors (still easy to find in certain charcters). Some where liek Walmart I've seen blue stick lamp post, or red or white( but don't liek white lamp post for a boy)and get a red or blue shade and thats an accesory. what abotu toy storage they have pop up storae bins ( Jc penny even sell hard ones) in red blur and white. If It was me doing my son's room I would have his walls painted white. and do all accersoires in red and blue. I think that white curtains, lamps, etc. look to be more for girls then little boys. and you can also fine different color clocks.
Thanks for the ideas. We haven't done anything to his room since he was 2 and then we did Fairly Odd Parents, it was really cute, but he has now said that he is too old for that. I am excited about getting started.
I personally can really picture an american room. The bottom half a blue, the top half big red and white stripes. I would use more of a marroom and cream and comparable blue, instead of primaries. You could hang normal rockwall prints (think baseball or scouts). You could have a flag framed. You could do all blue walls (love the denim treatment too), and do dark red curtains, do a baseball theme with decor. Or you could do red walls (only if you have a very calm child) and do demin bedding.

If I were doing W's room in a red, white, and blue patriotic theme here are some things I might do... Paint the wall below the chair rail with vertical red and white stripes. Paint the chair rail and wall above the chair rail white, and then paint a foot-wide blue stripe just above the chair rail and stencil white stars in the blue all the way about the room. If J doesn't have a chair rail then you could just do the blue stripe about four feet up the wall. You could even edge the blue stripe with gold paint which would look nice if you painted the entire wall white instead of doing the vertical red and white stripes at the bottom. Then I would get three patriotic type posters (a soaring eagle, American flag, Blue Angels flying in formation) one in a red frame, one in white, and one in blue and hang them in a group on one wall. Maybe you could get posters from C's base or even have a picture of C in his uniform? For the windows I would use solid blue panels and flag bunting for a valance, but if you go with solid walls instead of having stripes you could make curtain panels out of red and white striped fabric and use a blue fabric (one with stars on it if I could find it) for a valance. Gold cording with a tassel (similar to what you see on some flags) would make a nice tie-back for the panels. On the bed I would have a set of solid red sheets and a set of solid blue (not at the same time, of course) and a patriotic themed bed spread if I could find one I liked. If not, I would go with a solid blue bed spread and solid red and white sheet sets. Just remember that you shouldn't use an actual American Flag for bedding or curtains. That's a flag etiquette no-no. You can hang one on the wall though, if you like. Sorry, that's the flag etiquette nerd coming out in me. I wish W wanted a room theme like this. We have been discussing re-doing his room and I have tried to talk him into this theme, but he wants trains. Not Thomas the Tank Engine, but real-looking trains.
You guys are great and Stacy I love your ideas!! We feel the same about flag etiquette. Thanks so much for yall's creative ideas!! I have none of my own!! LOL
I would stay away from cartoon characters. They outgrow them too quickly. If you do go with that, keep it in your accessories. Accessories are much easier to remove/replace than wall treatments. Why does your son want red, white & blue? Is it an American theme he wants or does he just like those colors? I have seen an adorable western theme done with those colors. I like Kaye's idea of a maroon or cranberry red instead of primary colors. I would also stay away from too many furniture pieces that they cannot grow into. I guess you can tell I am always thinking long term.....which is quite funny because I have re-done my children's rooms several times. I like redecorating but I try to keep the furniture neutral.
Well, he is all about being patriotic. We are a patriotic family, although I have never thought about decorating like that, but that is what he wants. Last year I bought him the cutest cowboy bedding set (more for me than him because I love cowboy stuff). The colors in it are already denim, red and white checks with the cutest cowboy in the middle of the comforter. I love it, but he thinks it for a baby. We will probably use it for a little while longer, just because it is in great shape and was not cheap!! I am not a fan of cartoon characters, that is what he had before and it drove me nuts. Please keep coming with ideas. I love hearing them!
