Heat Rash

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2004: Heat Rash
By Debbie on Thursday, July 15, 2004 - 12:49 pm:

I have been getting heat rashes a lot this summer. I have never had one before and I am wondering why it is happening now. I did get one when I went to Palm Springs in the Spring. It was really hot, over 100, so I didn't think much of it. However, I have gotten three more since then. I actually woke up with one today. I am used to a lot warmer weather, so I am not sure why I am getting them now. Does anyone else get them??? In Palm Springs, I had the rash on my arms, chest, and legs by the time I came home. The last few times, it has been on my arms only. It hasn't even been really hot here, just 70's low 80's, so I don't understand why I am getting them. Any suggestions on how to make it go away sooner??

Are you sure they are heat rashes? Could they be caused by stress?

Emily, that was my thinking, too. Rashes can come on for MANY reasons. I would document them. If they continue, perhaps a doctor visit is in order.

I am pretty sure they are heat rashes. I went online and it fits the description and the pictures look just like it. I am usually outside the day before I get them. The one I had this morning looked better this afternoon and then I took my ds's to the pool. It got worse when we were outside. However, once I came home and showered and cooled down it is better again.

I guess I will have to go to the doctor if I keep getting them. It has been stressful around here with us being in a new area and dh not liking his job. I guess stress is a possibility.

I don't know if you already know this but a cornstarch-based powder, like most baby powders, can be really soothing on a heat rash. Just thought I'd offer a piece of advice that I have found helpful on several occasions. How is it going? Are you finding any relief?

YOu know a funny thought here. But when you had the first rash, were your cheeks flush? You could have 5ths disease, which does flare up for about 6 weeks in the heat.

Thank you for the baby powder suggestion. I will have to try it if I get another one. The rash is almost gone today. I was lucky that it was only in the 70's this weekend, so I didn't get too hot. I think I have narrowed it down to the new sunscreen I was using. I bought a new brand when I was in Palm Springs, that is the first time I broke out in the rash. Each time I broke out in a rash, I had used that sunscreen. When I used the one that I put on my dks, I have been fine. Needless to say, I threw out that sunscreen and I will just be using the one I put on my dks. Hopefully, I won't get anymore. The rash sure is ugly and it is almost impossible to keep from sweating in the middle of summer!!

I hope that is was just the sunscreen. I am glad it is better now.
